Gorgeous Snowy White Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Rose by Evans This is a truly gorgeous and rare square-shaped Evans compact with a full edge-to-edge snowy white delicate enamel guilloche design on the lid with a tiny single hand-painted rose in the center. The design in the guilloche is about the prettiest I have ever seen. Be sure to view the close-up! The rest of the case is brass and the interior is bright and shiny and in mint condition with a covered powder well in the base, a metallic mirror in the lid, and a rouge pot beneath that. The rouge has the original puff, reorder instructions from MayFair paper, and MayFair embossed logo on the rouge so it has never been used. The top of the compact is in mint condition; however, there are a few dark spots on the front and side edges and the bottom. The compact measures just a tad over 2" square. It features a palegreen enamel guilloche lid with hand-painted garlands of pink roses and blue forget-me-nots on a center vignette which is pale yellow. Inside the lid you will find a covered powder and rouge pot in the base with an original puff. The lid has a beveled mirror which is in fairly decent condition. The back of the compact is plain green enamel and has a four very tiny dents which didn't show up well in the photos they are so minute. LaMode Heart-Shaped Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses This is one of my favorite LaMode compacts because it is shaped like a heart and has the prettiest pale blue enamel guilloche on the lid with a center vignette of a bouquet of roses and blue forget-me-nots hand-painted on a white heart-shaped center. The lid is scalloped all the way around and the edge is very ornately embossed. Interior of the compact features a full mirror in the lid and the base has an original puff (used) and powder screen. It is signed LaMode on the lower rim of the mirror. It is in very good condition overall with some slight scuffing to the bottom from being stored. Compact measures 2-5/8" high x 2-3/8" wide x 1/2" thick. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

The top is a pale peach color with beautiful radiant designs that almost give it a holographic appearance. Inside is a full mirror in the lid and a fluffy peach swansdown puff. The base could hold either a powder pat or loose powder. The little puff has never been used and is in perfect condition as is the entire compact. It is signed on the base METAL ARTéS and a symbol that I can't make out entirely. Measures 1-1/ 2" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Lovely Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Flowers by Evans and Comb by B. B. Co. - Both Pieces Siged & Dated Even though this compact and comb were made by two different companies, they were together when I purchased them so I am basically including the comb for free. Both are done in plain enamel as well as enamel guilloche. The compact's lid is all baby blue enamel guilloche with gorgeous hand-painted roses. The rest of the compact is plain enamel and done in a gradient color that goes from light green at the edges to a light aqua in the center ... really pretty! The comb is plain green enamel with a vignette of a hand-painted rose on a pale blue enamel guilloche background. The compact was made by Evans and has a tap-sift for powder in the base with an original puff and a covered rouge pot in the lid. The cover of the rouge pot acts as a metallic mirror which is in excellent condition. The rouge inside appears unused. It is signed Evans TapSift in the base with patent numbers that date it to 1932. The comb retracts and was made by B.B. Co. dated April 25 192? ... I can't make out the last number but definitely from the 1920's. There is a slide mechanism on the top which extends the faux tortie comb ... very clever design and works well. Overall it is in good condition with myriad minor surface scratches that are visible upon close inspection but nothing glaring on the fronts. The back of the compact has a small flake in the lower right corner that unfortunately did not show up well in the photos. Again, not a big deal as it is mostly visible only when held at an angle to the light. Otherwise it blends in pretty well. The compact measures 2-1/2" square; the comb is 4-3/8" x 5/8". Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Figural Compact with Hand-Painted "Little Fruit Seller" Painting This is a beautiful sterling silver compact featuring a hand-painted rendition of a painting entitled the "Little Fruit Seller" by Bartolomé E. Murillo circa 1675. There is no mirror inside; however, I have commissioned one to be made which should be ready in a few weeks. It's not beveled, but it will fit inside and I will include it with the compact and include a photo when I have it. I will not glue it in but will leave that to you to decide if you want to keep it or not. The enameling on the scene is in perfect condition with no damage that I can see at all. However, there is a chip to the blue enamel guilloche right behind the hinge at the top. Other than that, it's in really great condition with no scratches or scuffs at all. There are hallmarks on the rim which would make it from either Austria or Germany, but the maker's marks are too obscure to identify. I am also including a new little lime green swansdown puff. Measures almost 2-1/4" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Blue & White Enamel Guilloche Compact by Northern Goldsmiths & Silversmiths of Birmingham, England, Dated 1942 ~ with Adorable Inscription Inside This has long been in my collection and had been stored away since 2002! I recently came across it and have decided to offer it here. It is a beautiful sterling silver compact with hallmarks from the Northern Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. of Birmingham, England. The hallmarks date this piece to 1939. The case is engraved around the perimeter and the entire surface is done in a snowy white enamel guilloche with radiating rays that glisten in the light. This is surrounded by a very thin border of of blue enamel inlaid in the engraved silver. The back is an engine-turned design. Inside you will find a full beveled mirror in the lid in excellent usable condition. The base has a powder screen over an open powder well. Inside the powder well you can find the hallmarks for the Northern G & S Co. and the date marks for Birmingham, 1939. What I love most about this compact, however, is the inscription on the lower edge "From ANDREW to MARY May 1942". I can't help but wonder ... was this a birthday gift? Engagement gift? Christmas gift? It could have been any of those things or something else entirely. I wonder where Mary and Andrew are now and wish I could find her to return her lovely compact to her. When I find inscriptions like this, my mind runs away with all the what ifs? Overall it is in excellent condition with virtually no scratches to the surface at all. There is, however, a flake in the clearcoat along the lower right side edge that is visible in the photos but in person you would never notice it. The back has a few darker spots in the silver ... very faint but I need to point out. Measures 2-5/8" square. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Hand-Painted Enamel Guilloche & Polychromed Compact with Finger Ring Chain by Evans This little compact features two styles of decoration on a round compact with a finger ring chain made by Evans. The center vignette is done in robins egg blue enamel guilloche background with a hand-painted pink rose in the middle. Surrounding this is an engine-turned circle with tiny flowers done in polychrome paint in yellow and blue. Embossed garlands connect these together. The back of the compact is done in engine-turned radiating rays. Inside you will find a half-mirror in the lid with a rouge pot beneath and a rotating powder sifter in the base. The chainlink handle is topped with an embossed finger ring. It is signed EVANS under the mirror. The enamel and polychromed flowers are in excellent condition. The only issue with this one is that the hinge is partially broken and has a wobble to it; however, the compact will snap together tightly and it is totally usable as it is. You would just have to use restraint to not bend the top back too far. Measures a wee bit over 2" diameter and the handle has a 3-1/4" drop. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Inside you will find a crescent shaped mirror in the lid with a rouge pot (still inside!). and rotating powder sifter in the base. The chainlink handle is done in embossed bars and rings. Sterling Silver Baby Blue Enamel Guilloche Compact Made in Austria Here is a very pretty sterling silver compact completely covered in baby blue enamel guilloche. The interior features a mirror in the lid and a rotating powder well in the base. Although at a glance it appears to be perfect, upon close inspection you will find some issues. The side edge on the left has a very teeny ding in the enamel. And on the lid right below the hinge is a thin sliver of enamel missing (not even sure how this could happen). There is also a scratch on the bottom of the case. Other than that it is in very good usable condition and would be great for display. The guilloche designs radiate from the center and almost have a holographic effect. Very pretty! It bears hallmarks for Austria and 935 sterling on the rim of the lid. Measures 2" diameter. Evans Figural Basse Taille Enamel Compact with Famous Watteau Painting "Girl with Music Manuscript Book" from 1726 - Never Used! Basse Taille is a very rarely found enameling technique and this one is done in a beautiful royal blue with highlights of the underlying metal showing through. Made by Evans, the scene is of a famous Watteau painting from 1726 entitled "Girl with Music Manuscript Book". The scene is done in varying reliefs which give depth to the enamel and that you can feel on the surface. It's just gorgeous! The case itself is brass and has embossed trim around the edge of the scene. The sides are polished and the base is finished in concentric circles. There are some specks visible in the polished portion if looking closely. These might easily polish off but I prefer to leave them as found. Inside is a full size mirror in the lid in excellent condition. The base would hold loose powder and has the original screen. The original Evans signed puff is still inside but has come apart due to age although it has never been used. Measures 2-5/8" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

French(?) Cloisonné Enamel Guilloche Compact Pendant This is a gorgeous double-sided compact that I have had in my collection since 2004. I have always loved the unique design of this one ... it has teal blue enamel guilloche background on the top with cloisonné flowers and design and a teal blue enamel guilloche covering the bottom. There is a tiny ring to hang from a necklace or a chatelaine. Inside is an open powder well in the bottom and a full mirror in the lid with a pretty rope bezel retainer. The mirror is slightly fogged from age but still usable. While I could not find any maker's marks on this, it is reminiscent of others I have and have had that were made in France so I assume this is French as well. I would date this to the late 1800's or early 1900's. The base is probably brass or bronze and is embossed all around the edges as seen in photos. Measures only 1-3/8" diameter. Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact with Flower Basket & Roses by F & B Co. Dated 1926
In my opinion, F & B makes the most beautiful compacts. The colors are always so breathtaking and the depth of the enamel guilloche is above and beyond the norm. This one features a gorgeous center vignette in snowy white with a pink-ribboned flower basket overflowing with pink roses and blue forget-me-nots surrounded by a radiating design of turquoise enamel guilloche. When opened, there is a spring-loaded mirror with a celluloid backing which springs up from the powder sifter beneath. There is an original puff still inside. The top of the compact has a built-in rouge pot with rouge still inside and a little bar which holds the original puff which is also still inside. Marked "F & B Sterling" on rim and has patent date of 9-21-1926 on the inside lid. As for condition, the top and bottom are nearly perfect with just some teeny scratches visible when held at an angle to the light and very close inspection. There is a chip on the edge of one side at about 11:00 position and another even smaller one at about 7:00 on the side. Both are pictured in the close-up photos. Even so, it's a stunningly gorgeous compact that would highlight any collection! Measures 2-1/8" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Octagon Shaped Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Flowers by R & G Co. This is a stunning little compact made by R & G Co. with a very unusual design to the enamel guilloche. The lid is done in three sections divided by silver curved inlays. The guilloche design is different on the green sections than the ivory and they all have hand-painted flowers in each segment. The compact itself is octagon shaped again with silver dividing the sections of enameling. This design is repeated on the back but without the lid design. It is very pretty. Inside you will find a crescent-shaped mirror in the lid which is in excellent shape with a rouge pot beneath and a rotating powder sifter in the base with an original puff. The compact snaps together tightly. Overall it is in excellent condition. Measures 2" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Unusual Peachy Pink Color Enamel Guilloche Compact with Gold Highlights and Hand-Painted Roses This compact has been in my collection for so many years mainly due to its unusual coloring. It's not quite pink, not quite peach, but somewhere in between. The metal is a coppery color which does show some wear. The back of the compact is the same color but has deep gold highlights that move in the light. The inside of the compact has a full mirror in the lid which is in excellent usable condition. The base has a rotating powder sifter with engine turned designs. This compact was well-loved by some previous owner and has some touch-ups to the enamel around the edges. These were done years ago and aren't really that noticeable (my photos make them look much worse!). Measures 2" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Snowy White Enamel Guilloche Compact with Pale Yellow Center and Hand-Painted Roses This is a very pretty compact that I have had in my collection for several years. It has white enamel guilloche on the top with a center vignette of pale yellow with hand-painted roses. The sides are both also done in enamel guilloche with a little rose on either end. The front and back sides of the compact are embossed. Inside is a beveled mirror in the lid, a covered rouge pot with original puff and rouge, and a covered powder well. There is no maker's mark on this piece that I could find, but I am assuming it is made in the New England area around 1920. sweet little compact was made by the Thomae Co. of Attleboro, Massachusetts, around 1920 or 1930. The bottom of the compact is all done in snow white enamel guilloche. This is a beautiful compact that will display nicely or can be used; however, it does have it's flaws. Both the top and bottom have numerous surface scratches in the clear enamel coating that can be seen when held at an angle to the light. And one of the sides has an early repair that is noticeable (the photo actually makes it look much worse than in person for some reason). For these reasons, I am offering this compact at a very low price. If it were perfect, it would be two or three times as much. This is a great piece for a beginning collector and one you could use without worrying about damaging it. Measures 3-1/8" x 2-1/8" x 5/8" deep. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Hand-Painted Enamel Guilloche Compact with Chainlink Handle by E·A·M This lovely octagon shaped enamel guilloche compact was made by E·A·M. The entire front is covered in enamel guilloche with a center scallop shaped section in snow white with hand-painted pink roses on the corners. The background on the white guilloche is sectioned with different designs that are simply gorgeous! This is surrounded by a mint green border in completely different guilloche designs. The back is done in incised diamond patterns which is very pretty. Open the compact and you will find a rotating powder sifter with original puff on one side and a shiny metallic mirror on the other with a recessed area for a rouge pot. There is a chainlink handle attached to the top. Overall this compact is in near perfect condition. At first glance, I assumed it was mint until I looked at an enlarged photo. Then I was able to see a very teeny little miss in the enamel alog the bottom edge right at the top of the green section. Other than that, I would say it was basically unused and the enamel miss could be in the manufacturing process. Measures 2-1/4" wide x 2-5/8" high counting clasp. Chain handle has 5" drop. Hand-Painted Pictorial Enamel Guilloche Compact Attributed to R & G Co. ~ Near Mint Condition! This lovely compact is attributed to R & G Co (Ripley & Gowan) even though it is unmarked. The design of the clasp and case is classic R & G design and I have had others similar which were signed. It is possible the signature is beneath an interior piece. In any event, this beautiful compact features a hand-painted flower basket with pink roses and blue forget-me-nots. There is also a matching cascading flower garland draping down either side. The background of the guilloche has two distinguishing designs in a striped effect: one stripe features checkers and the other is vertical lines. Very unique and pretty! The inside features a mirror in one side and a rotating powder well and rouge pot in the other. Both original puffs are still intact and gently used if at all. The compact is pretty much in mint condition and still retains rouge and powder inside. The back of the compact is richly damascened in beautiful designs which reflect the light at different angles (see photos). It is an exceptional piece throughout! Sweet Little Compact with Enamel Guilloche Vignette on Top and Jeweled Clasp from Carleton College I wish I knew the story behind this precious little compact. I have never seen another one even remotely like it ... the size is tiny being only a tad over 1-1/2" diameter. The lid is all engraved with flowers and curlicues and has a center vignette with handpainted pink flowers on a pale green enamel guilloche background. Inside is a crescent mirror and rouge pot in the lid and a powder pot in the base with original nesting puffs. I have never come across this type of puff either! The compact latches shut tightly with a push-button ruby jewel. But what makes it interesting is the insignia on the bottom. It is a tiny round button which reads "SIG. COLL. CARLETON NORTHFIELD MINN 1866" with what appears to be books or some symbol for education. There are no other marks on the piece. Both rouge pot and powder pots are intact. Note: When closing the lid, it will not stay shut. The way it works is you have to push the gemstone in, close the lid, and release. It then locks into place and stays firmly closed. Again, never saw one like this! (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Lovely Double Enamel Guilloche Hand-Painted Compact by FMCo Finberg Mfg. Co. (FMCo) was known for their extraordinary quality enamel guilloche lady's vanity items in the early 1900's. This piece is a superb example of one of their beautiful hand-painted compacts with an ornately detailed carrying chain. The compact itself is eight-sided with inlaid sections of black enamel. The center section is the lid and is done in a snow white enamel guilloche background with an inlaid solid black enamel basket. On top of this are hand-painted pink roses overflowing the basket. It is a design I have not had before! The back of the compact replicates the front but without the basket design. ALL OF THE ENAMEL IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE WHATSOEVER! Inside the compact, you will find a crescent shaped mirror in the lid with a rouge pot tucked beneath it with rouge still in place. In the bottom portion you will find a rotating powder sifter to hold loose powder. There is a puff inside and traces of powder still in the sifter. It is signed FMCO beside the rouge pot. This compact has no apologies whatsoever. Measures 2-1/8" diameter. Chain handle has 4" drop. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Figural Compact with Hand-Painted Egyptian Scene with Camel, Sheik & Pyramid This is a beautiful sterling silver compact featuring a hand-painted scene of an Egyptian desert with camel, palm tree, sheik and pyramid in the background. Probably done in the 1920's when King Tut's tomb was found, this beautiful compact is in perfect condition! It is small enough to be worn as a pendant and has the soldered ring from which to hang a chain. I will include a new sterling silver chain to use with this lovely piece. The enamel scene covers the entire top and has an iridescent effect which is hard to capture in pictures. The inside features a mirror in the lid and a gold vermeil pot. The bail is marked 935 for sterling and the letters ASST which I am trying to research. . This entire compact is in excellent condition with no damage whatsoever. It is a rare beauty! Measures 1-1/2" diameter. Follow-up: According to Tom from Marks4Antiques.com, "Although these ASST initials are not documented and there are no official country of origin hallmarks on this piece, I am practically certain that it was made in Switzerland. I would also not be surprised if this was ordered by an upscale shop that catered to wealthy clients in Cairo or Alexandria, Egypt, during the 1920s - 1930s. As you know, it was around 1922 when King Tut's tomb was excavated, that sparked a period of special intrigue for American & European travelers that visited that country buying related mementos." Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Blue Flower and Wrist Chain Here is a lovely little compact that has always been a favorite of mine because of the unusual design on the front. A center round vignette features an offset hand-painted blue flower on a creamy enamel guilloche backgroundThis beautiful compact has been in my collection for almost 20 years. I have kept it because it is an absolutely pristine example of an enamel guilloche. This is surrounded by turquoise blue enamel guilloche inset in champleve. The interior of the compact has a small mirror in the lid (some minor loss but still usable) and a place for a rouge pot and puff holder. The base has a rotating powder sifter with engine turned designs ... so pretty! The back of the compact is also engine turned and it is finished off with a bar and link wrist chain for easy carrying. It is in very good overall condition with no discernible damage, just normal minor wear from age use. The compact measures 2-1/2" square and the chain has a 4-1/4" drop. RARE Sterling Silver Double Enamel Guilloche Compact Made in Switzerland ~ Circa 1907 I am so pleased to be able to offer this extraordinary sterling silver double enamel guilloche compact which has been in my collection since 2005. I only recently was able to find out some information about the hallmarks on this one. According to Marks4Antiques.com, the compact was made by PHV, a silversmith known to work in Switzerland. The item was then imported to London, England, in 1908 (the "n" hallmark denotes this). Therefore, it was made in Switzerland prior to that year, so it would be made in 1907 or earlier. The front and back are identically done in a rich shade of blue enamel guilloche in radiating concentric circles that have a sunburst design. When the compact is moved, the rays look like they are actually moving. The compact is shaped like an elongated octagon. The case opens with a small hasp on the front. Inside you will find a full mirror in the lid (the mirror is broken at the very bottom but the pieces are in place and the mirror is still usable as is). The bottom half is exquisitely detailed with a hinged covered rouge compartment and a powder well atop that. It is all finished in gold vermeil. Both the removable rouge and powder pots are by Houbigant and are marked as such on the bottom. The hallmarks can be found in the powder compartment. The first mark is PHV for the maker, the second is the import mark, the third is the 925 sterling mark, and the last mark is the letter "n" for the year 1908 in London. I am leaving the mirror as is for the purist, but it is not beveled so could be easily replaced if desired. Enamel guilloche on the top of the case is in excellent condition with only a few minor scratches noticeable on very close inspection (I didn't notice them at all until looking at this with a magnifying glass). The enamel guilloche on the back of the case has 3 or 4 "slivers" in the clear topcoat which cannot be seen when looking at it directly. However, when you turn it into the light, you can see where a little "slice" of the clear section is missing right along the edge at 3 of the corner spots. I tried to photograph this and you can see them in one photo but again, they are very hard to discern in person. This is a large piece measuring 3" x almost 1-3/4" across. Lovely Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Flowers by B. B. Co. This compact was made by Bliss Brothers Co. (B. B. Co.) and has a beautiful hand-painted enamel guilloche front. The color is what I would call ice blue and has 3 hand-painted pink flowers spaced evenly around the lid. There are two different patterns in the guilloche design ... be sure to look at the close-ups to see what I am referring to. The sides are embossed with tiny flowers all the way around. So pretty! Inside the compact, you will find a mirror in the lid which lifts up to expose a rouge pot beneath. In the bottom portion you will find a covered powder well with a puff on top. It is signed B.B. Co. right above the hinge on the powder cover. The back of the compact is done in a deeper blue enamel (not guilloche). The top of the compact is in excellent condition as well with no damage to the enamel guilloche whatsoever. The bottom of the compact has very minor wear visible when held at an angle to the light but no scratches of note. It is pretty darn good! Measures just a wee bit over 1-3/4" diameter. Lovely Double Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses by FMCo Finberg Mfg. Co. (FMCo) was known for their extraordinary quality enamel guilloche lady's vanity items in the early 1900's. This piece is a superb example of one of their beautiful hand-painted compacts. "Guilloche" refers to the designs beneath the enamel which are engraved into the base metal. This compact has three different guilloche designs on the front alone! Be sure to look at the close-ups to see what I am referring to. The centermost portion is white with tiny gold dots and a space for a monogram (it is blank). Then above and below are to bands of pale, pale buttery yellow with pink roses on either end. These hand-painted roses trail tiny rosebuds into the white section. The sides are banded in a soft pale aqua green shade which is just beautiful. When you look at the close-up, note the different patterns in the guilloche which shows through the colors making contrasting designs. So pretty! The back of the compact is also pale aqua green enamel guilloche (hence the term "double enamel guilloche") in two different designs (there is a border in a contrasting pattern). Inside the compact, you will find a mirror in the lid which lifts up to expose a rouge pot with puff tucked beneath. In the bottom portion you will find a covered powder well. It is signed FMCO in two places in the bottom (see close-ups). The interior is all done in gold wash and is in excellent condition. The outside of the compact is in excellent condition as well with no damage to the enamel whatsoever. It is about as perfect as you will find for an item of this age! I forgot to mention the compact is "pillow shaped" which means it is curved around the edges and fits comfortably in your hand. Measures 2-1/4" x 1-3/4" not counting clasp. The interior is fitted with a crescent shaped mirror in the lid above a new rouge pot still with foil cover. The bottom half has a rotating powder sifter and a clip to hold a puff. Lovely Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses by FM Co Known for their quality enamel guilloche items, FM Co is the maker of this little beauty. Both the front and back of the compact are covered completely in a pale pale cream color with just a whisper of yellow tint. The hand-painted flowers consist of roses and blue forget-me-nots. Inside the compact is finished in a beautiful gold gilt finish with two covered pots. The lid portion has a covered rouge pot with a rouge pat still inside. The lid of the rouge pot is polished metal which serves as the mirror. The base has a covered powder well with a puff on the top which I don't believe is original but an early replacement. The compact is signed under the hinge of the rouge pot FM Co. It is in excellent condition with no damage to the enamel at all. Beautiful! Measures approximately 2-1/8" across x 2-3/8" high. French Double-Sided Cloisonné Enamel Guilloche Compact with Braided Silk Cord This is a gorgeous double-sided compact that I have had in my collection since 2005. I have always loved the unique design of this one ... it has teal blue enamel guilloche backgrounds on both lids with cloisonné roses and tiny white flowers and gold ribbons. The blues are slightly different on each side and the roses are a coral pink on one side and a darker red on the other. These slight variations in color would help the user to know which side holds what. Both sides have mirrors beneath the lids and both mirrors show significant clouding from age. The compartments are open for power or patches or whatever you wish to place inside. There is an original Made in France paper sticker still affixed in one of the compartments. The compact is suspended from the original braided silk cord with two fancy "knots" on either side. This is not removable. I would date this to the late 1800's or early 1900's. The enameling on the pink rose side is in perfect condition; the other side has some superficial scuffs visible when held to light but nothing noticeable at all. The case is gold tone and is either French bronze or a very good brass. It has engine turned designs all the way around. Measures 2" diameter x 5/8" deep. Braided handle is 7" long. Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Flowers and Unusual Hinged Rigid Handle by Marathon This is a very unique style of handle on a compact ... it is a fancy embossed rigid handle which is hinged at the base. The ball snap closer rests beneath this. The front of the compact is done in a lovely mint green enamel guilloche with hand-painted roses and forget-me-nots on either side of a center vignette with engine turned designs. The sides are also richly embossed on both front and back edges. The interior features a mirror on one side and a rotating powder sifter with center rouge pot on the other. There are two original unused puffs inside and the original rouge pot as well. The rouge pot has a slight tear in the foil cover which has rubbed off a bit on the puff but the puff itself has never been used. Enameling on compact portion is all excellent. Measures 2-5/8" wide x 2-1/4" high not counting handle or closure which adds another 1-1/4". (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact/Patch Box by R. Blackinton Co. This beautiful compact was made by R. Blackinton Co. and featuresa beautiful snow white enamel guilloche lid with hand-painted roses and a blue ribbon. It has a mirror inside the lid and a tiny ring on the back hinge for attaching to a chatelaine or a necklace. The front has the letters "B E A" inscribed which could be initials or the name Bea ... makes you wonder about the young lady who treasured this a century ago! Since it has a mirror, it could be used as either a compact with loose powder or as a patch box. I am including a darling little merino lambswool puff. It is in excellent condition with only some very minor superficial scuffs only visible when turned in the light ... very difficult to see with the naked eye Hallmarked on inside rim. Measures 1-1/2" diameter x 3/4" deep. Lid is slightly domed. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Monet's Cliffs by the Sea Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact Made in Sweden This gorgeous compact features a variant of Claude Monet's Cliffs by the Sea (or End of the Day) painting. The compact has a slightly domed lid and the scene covers it fully from edge to edge. The sene is of a sun setting behind a sea cliff with birds and ocean in the foreground. The sun is right in the middle which is awesome because the guilloche design radiates outward from the center and looks like the rays of the sun. This is reflected down in the water. The colors of the setting sun are iridescent and change when you move the compact which makes it like a hologram ... it is one of the prettiest I have seen. The sides are a soft creamy white enamel guilloche. Inside is a mirror in the lid and a maribou puff. The bottom of the compact is plain silver with the marks 925 SGR engraved in the center which denotes Gullringen A.S., an artisan's association in Sweden. The condition of the top is very good ... there is one scratch in the clearcoat right at the base of the cliff but it has to be held to the light to see it. It does not go through to the painting. Compact measures almost 2" diameter x 3/8" deep. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Deco Influence Enamel Guilloche Compact with Bluebells and Gold Accents This is a beautiful enamel guilloche compact done in Art Deco influence ... it has four quadrants on the front alternating between solid black enamel panels with gold designs and white enamel guilloche panels with pretty bluebell flowers also with gold accents. The outer portion of the compact and the back are all finished in snowy white enamel guilloche. The interior has a mirror in the lid and a rotating powder sifter in the base all done in gold wash. There are no hallmarks anywhere but it is reminiscent of the fine Austrian compacts. It is possibly marked beneath the sifter but I was not able to pop it out to check so not sure of the origin. It is in excellent condition with no obvious damage anywhere, just very minuscule superficial scuffs on the base consistent with age. The compact is not flat but rather has a convex saucer shape when viewed from the side. Measures a bit over 2-1/4" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Scenic Enamel Guilloche Compact with Variant of "Moonlight in Venice" Painting by Thomas Moran Painters who painted these compacts took artistic license and duplicated this famous painting with many variations and this is yet another example of this. The scene is beautifully done with subtle color changes in an enamel guilloche which literally glows. The painting on the lid completely covers it with no border at all. It is marked sterling silver on the rim of the lid but no maker's mark. Inside the lid is a mirror with and the bottom has a rotating sifter in gold. There are no makers marks. As for condition, the enamel on the lid is perfect and the bottom is perfect. However, on the edges there are several dings in the enamel, some of which have been inpainted by a previous owner and not that well. But since they are on the edge, they really aren't that noticeable from the top. The important thing is that the enamel guilloche scene is perfect! I have had this compact on display in my collection since 2002 and it was never an issue for me, particularly since the price was affordable at the time because of this and I am passing that along to you as well. In fact, I am asking exactly what I paid for it way back then! Please see all pics for close-ups of these areas. Measures 2-1/8" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses by Thomae Here is another stunning example of Thomae's superb workmanship ... this sweet little compact again features a full enamel guilloche lid, this time in snow white with a garland of pink roses in full bloom and a single rose in the center. There is a ring at the top behind the hinge where a chainlink handle could be attached but this did not have one. Ironically, it is identical in every way to the one above with the exception of the design on the lid and the back. Inside is a mirror in the lid and there is a loose powder pat in the bottom. I am including a new tiny lambswool puff with a little pink bow ... absolutely adorable and perfect for this piece. The base of the compact is polished silver with no engine turned design. The enamel guilloche is in excellent condition with no notable damage whatsoever. There are a few tiny dents in the silver case, most on the bottom, but nothing significant. It is a lovely piece. Measures 1-1/2" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Compact with Cloisonné Enamel Guilloche Hand-Painted Florals and Gold Four-Leaf Clover by Watson This beautiful compact was made by the Watson Company of Attleboro, Mass., and dates from the early 1900's. The domed lid is done in cloisonné in aqua blue with two different enamel guilloche designs surrounding a white enamel guilloche center with hand-painted pink flowers and a gold four-leaf clover in the center. The lid removes completely to reveal an original lambswool puff with blue ruched silk and a tiny silver handle. The silk is a little frayed but not bad for a hundred some years old! The sides of the compact have faint engine-turned lines all the way around while the bottom is smooth. The enameling is in excellent condition and the silver case is in pretty good shape with a few dents which aren't too bad but need to be mentioned, one which is on the side edge that is probably the worst. Fully hallmarked on both bottom and top. Measures 1-1/2" diameter x 1" high. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Pendant Compact This pretty little sterling silver compact is meant to be sworn as a pendant or attached to a chatelaine. The lid portion is covered in a rich Wedgwood blue shade of enamel guilloche. It opens so that when it is raised to your face, the compact mirror would be facing you. The back of the case is elegantly monogrammed "JEB". Inside the compact is a little swansdown puff (well worn) with a ribbon tab. The original mirror in the lid has a very wide bevel but alas, the silvering is pretty well shot. This is a very early piece probably dating from the mid to late 1800's. There are hallmarks on the rim but they are so worn I can't date it definitively but they appear to be English, probably Birmingham or London. The silver content is very high and there are two very tiny dents in the outer rim but the enamel guilloche is all perfect. It is a very sweet piece! Measures a wee bit over 1-1/2" diameter. Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses by Wells, Inc. Here is a darling little sterling silver compact or patch box which was made by Wells, Inc. of Attleboro, Massachusetts. The box has a wreath of hand-painted pink roses on a snowy white enamel guilloche background ... so pretty! The compact opens to reveal a sweet little swansdown puff with silk ruching and a faux ivory handle (down is pretty worn). There may or may not have ever been a mirror in the lid ... there is no indication that there was one but there is room to add one in if desired. The lid snaps shut tightly so this could easily lend itself to use as a pill box. It is stamped Wells Sterling on the bottom. The lid has a rolled edge as does the bottom which makes a nice profile from the side. Measures a bit over 1-1/4" diameter (tiny!) x a bit under 1/2" deep (lid is slightly domed). Enameling is in great shape with no chips or damage that I can see. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Pentagon Shaped Enamel Guilloche Pendant Compact with Hand-Painted Rose and Forget-Me-Nots This little pendant compact is done in a pentagon shape and has a very pretty design to the enamel guilloche on the front -- you have to look at the pictures to see. The center pink rose is set in an ivory background of concentric circles. Outside that is a snow white background of radiating bands in the guilloche with hand-painted blue flowers encircling the entire edge. And the side edges are richly embossed in a beautiful cut design. The compact opens from the lower right corner and has a mirror in the lid and an open powder well in the base. There is a wisp of cloth in there for a puff but not original. It is unmarked but reminds me of Evans compacts that I have had that are similar ... usually marked with paper labels which are lost with time. Enameling is in pretty good condition overall .. there is one teeny scratch only in clearcoat which can be felt rather than seen. Other than that it is great. Back of compact is just gold tone metal which does show minor wear. Comes with gold rope chain. Measures 1-3/4" wide at top of pentagon x 1-5/8" high overall. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

The retainer is still there but the mirror is gone (easily replaced). The bottom portion opens to reveal a spring-loaded compartment that would hold a dime (back in the day you could get a ride home for that coin!). There is a tiny ring on the top where a chain could be attached ... probably would have been used to add to a chatelaine at one time. The back side is plain solid silver with no enamel. It is a lovely compact and is in very good condition with no damage to the enamel. Measures 1-3/8" diameter x 3/4" deep. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Cloisonne' Enamel Guilloche Compact with Hand-Painted Roses Here is a delightful little compact with an attached bar and link chain wrist handle ... the entire lid portion is done in snow white enamel guilloche with four pink roses. The outer rim is done in black cloisonne' enamel. The back of the compact is identical to the front minus the roses. Atop the hinge is a very pretty diamond cut design engraved in the metal ... a really nice touch! Inside the compact there is a crescent shaped mirror in the lid and an open rouge pot. The base is engine turned and open for loose powder. There is no puff. As for condition: this is not a sterling compact and some of the silver has wear to it that is much worse looking in my photos. There is a teeny little speck of enamel loss righ at the top of the white front center at the very edge. On the back is a little brown dot beneath the enameling that shows through the white ... this is not a chip, it is under the enameling. All of that being said, this is still a very beautiful compact that to the naked eye appears perfect. It is my pictures that make it look bad! :-) It measures 2-1/4" diameter and the chain has a 5" drop. The compact is pillow shaped. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Scenic Enamel & Enamel Guilloche Compact with Variant of "Moonlight in Venice" Painting by Thomas Moran Painters who painted these compacts took artistic license and duplicated this famous painting with many variations and this is no exception. The scene is beautifully done with subtle color changes in an enameled top - not guilloche - while the back of the compact is finished in a lovely deep periwinkle blue which is enamel guilloche. Rarely do you find the combination of both types of enameling on one compact but the effect is stunning. The painting on the lid completely covers it with no border at all. It is not sterling but has a copper color to the metal. Inside the lid is a mirror with a rope bezel retainer. The bottom has a rotating sifter in gold and an old puff which is probably not original. There are no makers marks. As for condition, the enamel on the lid is perfect and the bottom is perfect. On one side at about the 3:30 position is a very old and very well done repair. Here is a very pretty black and pink enamel guilloche compact with hand-painted roses on the front. The front edge beneath the pink angles downward toward the latch. Upon opening, the interior has two covered compartments for rouge and powder (original used rouge puff still inside). The mirror in the lid is beveled and is in very good condition. The black enameling on the exterior of the case is not guilloche but smooth and does have some wear mainly on the back side (unfortunately this was very hard to capture with camera as it is more smudges and loss of gloss as opposed to color loss). LaMode Double Enamel Guilloche Compact
Here is a truly beautiful compact made by LaMode, who are one of my favorite compact manufacturers. What makes this one so special is two things: size and the enamel guilloche back. It is a very substantial 2-1/8" diameter. The snowy white background sets off perfectly the candy pink center with hand-painted roses in each corner. The back is also done in snowy white with an intricate design. Interior features a metallic mirror in the top which opens to reveal a rouge pot still in foil and original puff. The base has a covered loose powder well. It has obviously been used but is still in very good condition. A beautiful addition to any collection! (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Sterling Silver Scenic Enamel Guilloche Vanity Case by Thomae with Pearl Handle
Another stunning sterling silver compact by the Thomae Co. (hallmarked on inside rim) ... this one comes from my own collection and is hard to part with. I particularly love the baby blue color and the pretty lavender pearls on the handle. The front has a lovely hand-painted scene on enamel guilloche in the center. The back is baby blue enamel guilloche with a tiny gold flower in the center and it is finished with a little metal tassel ... so cute! Interior has a rouge pot with puff on one side and a powder pat on the other with a double-sided mirror on a center hinge between the two halves. It is in exquisite condition. Compact measures approximately 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" not counting handle or tassel. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Lovely Enamel Guilloche Compact by F. M. Co.
This little beauty is a rarely found design by F. M. Co. The background on the case edge and back are solid black enamel. The center of the entire top is done in white enamel guilloche with a pale yellow border around the edge. Inside the center and around the border are clusters pink, blue, yellow and purple flowers. It is truly beautiful! The inside is all finished in bright gold wash ... a double-sided mirror lifts up in the lid to reveal a sealed rouge pot. The base has a covered powder pot. Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Compact with Flower Basket & Roses by F & B Co.
Doesn't F & B make the most delightful compacts? The colors are always so breathtaking and the depth of the enamel guilloche is above and beyond the norm. This one is no exception with its snowy white background in radiating enamel guilloche edged with a pale blue border. On the white ground is a hand-painted flower basket overflowing with roses and a garland of pink and blue flowers surrounds this. Outside the entire lid is a black enamel border. The interior has a center framed mirror which flips freely from one side to the other. There is a place for a rouge pot in the lid and a powder pat in the base. Marked "F & B Sterling" on rim. There is a tiny flip-up catch on the top to attach a ribbon or chain to wear as a wrist compact or pendant. It is in perfect condition throughout with only superficial scuffs visible when held to light with a loupe. Measures 2-1/8" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Gorgeous Bliss Brothers Double Enamel Guilloche Compact
This is one of the prettiest Bliss Brothers compacts I have ever seen ... the front is a beautiful snow white enamel guilloche with a powder blue border around it and a center pink rose with tiny blue flowers. The back of the compact -- and this is unusual for Bliss -- is all powder blue enamel guilloche. Interior has a beveled mirror in the lid and a covered powder well in the base. Although the sticker is no longer inside, I know it is 22Kt gold overlay from other BBCo. compacts like this that I have owned. It is in excellent condition with only superficial scuffs visible when held to light. Measures 2-3/4" wide x 2-1/4" high. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Rich Deep Turquoise Enamel Guilloche Compact from Austria
The color in this Austrian enamel guilloche compact is just breathtaking. Picture does not show it well, but color is a deep, dark turquoise on both front and back. On the lid there is a center design of a flower basket and flowers cut into the silver background and silhouetted against solid black enamel. Interior features a beveled mirror int he lid and a rotating poweder sifter in the base. The Austrian mark is not visible but I'm sure it is under there as I have had others with this identical design. They are usually marked under the sifter and are also usually sterling. Since I can't see the mark on this one, I can't guarantee sterling but my guess is that it is. Measures 2-1/8" diameter and is in very good condition with only superficial scuffs from wear. I have shown photos in two different lights to try to show depth of color.(Click on pic for more photos.) |
