~ PLEASE READ! ~Welcome to our brand new Hair Receivers page. Let me tell you a bit about how this page came about. Years ago, my partner and I had an opportunity to buy a vast collection of hair receivers -- nearly 400 in all -- which a young man had inherited from his parents. At the time, he was moving and could no longer keep the collection so we purchased it in toto with the hopes of possibly publishing a book. Over the years, many people wanted to purchase one or another of the hair receivers but we wanted to maintain the collection as a whole until such time as we could decide what we wanted to do with it. Due to changes in our own lives, we have decided to forego the book idea and are now offering these wonderful pieces to you, our customers, for the first time ever. The gentleman we purchased them from told us that he and his brother had bought many of them as gifts over the years for their parents and some of the items still had the purchase information inside them. Anything that came with the individual pieces will remain with them. Now you ask: what ARE hair receivers? Well, they are exactly that ... beautiful little dresser jars that were designed for the sole purpose of receiving hair. Women would gather the hair from their brushes and combs, roll it up and push it into the little hole in the lid. When enough hair was saved up, it was rolled into a larger ball, stuffed into a hairnet, and sewn shut to create a "ratt", an ingenious way to use one's own hair to create lift or filling for a bun or roll thus giving the illusion of fabulous volume, hence the Gibson girl big hair look. And when asked, "My, is that all your hair?" the young lass could smile and say with confidence, "Why yes, of course!" Hair was also used as stuffing for pincushions (oils from hair made great lubricant for pins), pillows or woven into small pieces of jewelry. While these were quite popular from Victorian times through the first decades of the 1900's, their use has long since waned. But with some imagination and repurposing, these can now be used in the bathroom or throughout the house as beautiful potpourri dishes. Or on your dresser to hold loose change or rings or even powder. Use your imagination! And if you dare, you could even create your OWN ratt and give your hair a new dimension. Let your imagination go wild! Email me your creative ideas and I'll be happy to share them on our Using Your Hair Receivers page showing some modern day uses for these little gems. Meanwhile, enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime offering. I will start out with several dozen and add to it as time permits until I get them all on. Be sure to check back frequently for latest additons. Remember ... prices will vary greatly and I am trying to list the best first so cheaper ones will be coming later :-) Newest additions will be at bottom of page. |
