Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact by Bellini Featuring Painting by Nicholas Lancret "Birdcage" Dated 1740 in Original Jewelers Box
This beautiful compact features a hand-painted rendition of Nicholas Lancret's "Birdcage" painting originally done in 1740. The compact is still in the original jeweler's box fromU. Bellini silversmith in Firenze (Florence), Italy. The gold gilt on this compact is like the day it was made ... absolutely beautiful! In fact, the compact has never been used and still retains the original powder screen and a tiny pink feather puff in perfect condition. There is a lovely beveled mirror in the lid in excellent condition as well. The enameling is near mint with only a few very small scratches (not even sure how that happened since it has been inside this box) visible when held to the light. Measures approximately 2-3/4" x 2-1/4"; box is 3-1/4" square.. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Tiny Patch / Pill Box with Rendition of Francois Boucher's "Lover's Tryst"
This is an adorable little patch box with a hand-painted scene that I believe is a rendition of Francois Boucher's "Lover's Tryst" painting. Originally there would have been a little mirror inside the lid which is no longer there. Probably used for a patch box, it would make a great pill box for use today. The gold vermeil on this compact is in perfect condition with no wear whatsoever and there are no scratches to the enameled surface. It is marked inside with the 800 sterling mark, a lozenge which I can't make out, and Italy. Measures approximately 1-7/8" wide x 1-1/2" high. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact featuring Mother Nursing Baby, Sheep, Dogs, Doves & More in MINT Condition!
This is a truly intricate scene and one I have not had before nor could I find another anywhere on the internet like it. There is a woman on the left nursing a baby while a young man approaches with a lamb. There is a donkey with doves on his back, sheep on the ground, and two dogs. Just so much going on! The scene is hand-painted and is surrounded by faux turquoise enamel. Inside you will find a beveled mirror in the lid, powder screen in the base, and a lovely pink swansdown puff with the original label still attached. I can't make out the wording on the label but it appears to be French. The enameling is in mint condition with no scuffs, scratches, chips or damage of any kind. The mirror is clear and also perfect. This is about the best condition you will find in these compacts with no apologies whatsoever. It measures 3-1/4" x 2-5/8" overall. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Extremely RARE Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact Featuring Painting of Colonial Courting Couple, Artist Unknown
This is an extremely rare figural Italian sterling vermeil compact featuring a scene I have never come across before. Both are in their elegant Sunday finest, he being topped with his lace cuffs and jabot, powdered wig and tricorn hat. She has an off-the-shoulder elgant gown with split tiered skirt. You can see his sword handle at his hip and he has a walking stick or cane in his hand. This is a beautifully detailed scene and a fabulous addition to any collection. The scene is bordered in faur malachite enamel panels. The inside has a shaped beveled mirror in the lid (it is a little crooked and could be straightened if desired) and a swansdown puff in the base. It is marked 800 (for sterling) on the mirror rim with a lozenge and bird symbol which is for Ottavio Spinelli's cases. Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact featuring Rare Scene of Girl with Basket of Cherries - New Unused!
This beautiful compact depicts a young girl resting on a wall with a basket of cherries. Beside her are 3 birds -- two pigeons and a dove -- that she has fed some of the cherries. The painting is very detailed and quite lovely and one I have never had before so it is quite rare. The scene is surrounded by enameled segments to resemble turquoise inlays. Inside you will find a shaped beleved mirror in the lid and the original powder screen in the bottom. Also seen is a paper label "Made in Italy" still affixed to the bottom. Obviously this compact has never been used as there are no traces of powder inside. It is in extraordinarily perfect condition. I had to look for quite a while with a loupe to see even a teeny mark or two on the surface of the enamel but without really searching hard, it appears to be 100% pristine. Hallmarks on rim show swan, 800, and lozenge attributed to Ottavio Spinelli of Florence. Measures almost 3-1/2" x 3" overall.. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact featuring Rare Scene of Horse Drawn Carriage
Here is another very rare scene depicting a romantic couple out for a carriage ride pulled by a beautiful white stallion. This is a scene that I have only seen one other time and that was on a website somewhere. I believe it to be extraordinarily rare as is the one right above. I'm sure it is a rendition of a long ago painting but I could not identify it. In any case, it is square shaped with cropped corners. The scene is surrounded in faux turquoise enamel. The inside has a shaped beveled mirror in the lid and a new maribou feather puff. It is marked 800 and has a lozenge mark for Florence, Italy, on the rim of the mirror. To my eye, the enameling on this is mint. I cannot see any scratches or scuffs at all. Measures 3" square.. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

RARE Style Italian Sterling Figural Compact with Hand-Painted "Charms of Country Life" Painting done in 1737 by Francois Boucher
Here is an amazing Italian sterling vermeil compact with a rarely seen -- in fact, this is the first one I have ever seen -- attached braided silver handle. It appears to be original to me so I believe it was done in the factory this way but again, I have never seen another like it. The compact features a famous painting done by Francois Boucher in 1737 entitled "Charms of Country Life". Also rarely found on these is the guilloche background seen in the close-up views of the painting. The interior was missing the mirror so a new one has been put in which is a little thicker than an antique mirror would be but it still works well with the compact. There is also a little tiny vintage swansdown hot pink puff included. Enameling on lid has has a very high glossy finish but does have some superficial surface scratches visible when held to light; otherwise, they really aren't noticeable at all as the scene is so detailed. Don't miss the little dog on the left lower edge and the two bickering sheep on the right side by the lake :-). This is a fairly large compact measuring 3-7/8" x 3-1/8" overall and the handle adds a 7" drop. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact with Rare Hand-Painted François Boucher's "The Love Letter" Painting in Original Jeweler's Presentation Box
This is a rare scene that I have only run across one other time and it is offered here on this page much further down. The scene is an unusual one of two ladies holding a white dove. After extensive research, I have identified this as a rendition of François Boucher's "The Love Letter" painting done in 1750. This lovely example is in its original velvet-lined presentation box from Spritzer & Furhmann, the jeweler who sold it. The compact features a beveled mirror inside which is in excellent condition. The original powder screen is also still inside and in great shape. Enameling on compact is 99% perfect with only 2 miniscule dots that I had to search for with a loupe to find ... no scratches at all. Compact measures approx. 3" wide x 3-1/4" high. Presentation box measures 4-3/4" x 4-1/2" x 1". (Click on pic for more photos.) |

RARE Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact with Hand-Painted Roman Scene - "Rebecca at the Well" by Gaspare Diziani
Here is a really beautiful compact that features a hand-painted scene that is a rendition of an Old Testament story, "Rebecca at the Well", painted by Gaspare Diziani around 1750 (identification thanks to a fellow collector). Although the scenes have several differences. There are four people in the scene and two of them (the two on the right) resemble servants to me. The woman in the center appears to be getting ready to be escorted on the arm of the gent on the left. Hence my "Stepping Out" title ... if someone knows the significance of this painting, please feel free to email me. I have done extensive research and not been able to find anything about it or anything even similar. Whatever the scene is, it is truly beautiful with so much detail. Now for the rest ... inside is all done in gold vermeil with a shaped beveled mirror in the lid in beautiful condition. Hallmarks inside are 800, Italy, and a small cartouche which I cannot make out the details. The colors on this compact are very vivid and it has a lot of depth in the painting. Upon very close inspection when held at an angle to the light, there are two or three scratches in the clearcoat that are really hard to find unless you are scrutinizing with a glass. Even at an angle, they are hard to pick up due to the richness of the colors. Measures 3-1/8" x 2-7/8". (Click on pic for more photos.) |

The scene is a rendition of a painting done in 1730 by Nicolas Lancret (title above) featuring a young woman with her arms outstretched in an obvious happy dance with musicians visible in the background. There appears to be an artists signature or initial in the lower right corner but I cannot identify it. The interior has a large beveled mirror in the lid and original powder screen in the base. Included is a new maribou feather puff. Back of the case has beautiful flowers and scrolls carved in the silver. It is in perfect condition with exception of some minor foxing on the mirror inside. Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact Featuring Rare Scene of Painting by Francesco Guardi Entitled "Town with a Bridge", Circa 1750
This lovely compact features a hand-painted scene of a pair of arched bridges, probably in Venice, with several people visible on the bridge and in the foreground ... it is a scene I have never seen before in all my years of collecting so I believe it is pretty rare. It was copied from a painting done by Francesco Guardi done in 1750 entitled Town with a Bridge. The border is a rich deep blue faux lapis enamel. The case is ornately embossed on all sides. The interior is done in gold vermeil and has a beveled mirror in the lid. The original powder screen and a little feathery puff are still inside as well. It is stamped 800, Made in Italy, and a hallmark that I cannot identify but am working on it. Comes with a little grey felt sleeve to protect it. I would say the enameling is in mint condition as there are no scratches that I can see on the main painting at all. There are some strange "spots" on the deep blue (you can see some on the left edge) but they appear to be in the manufacturing and are not damage that I can feel although they look a bit unusual, perhaps a glaze miss even though it is smooth to the touch. Odd! Thisis a really beautiful compact. Measures 2-3/4" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact Featuring Rochester Castle* in England
This gorgeous Italian sterling vermeil compact features an artist's rendition of the famous Rochester Castle in Kent, England, where Charles Dickens had wanted to be buried. The compact scene is surrounded by faux turquoise enameling and a person can be seen in the foreground of the castle at the lower edge. Inside the compact is a beveled mirror in the lid and a powder screen and swansdown puff in the base. It does not appear to have ever been used. It is signed 800 with 220 in a lozenge and a swan. As for condition, the enameling on the compact is absolutely mint with no scuffs or markings of any kind. The compact measures approximately 3-1/2" x 2-1/2". *Disclaimer: This may or may not be Rochester Castle but a close enough likeness for me to give it that name. Perhaps the artist took artistic license and tweaked it just enough so as to not get in trouble. In any case, it is a castle and beautiful regardless of whether it is actually Rochester or not. Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact with Hand-Painted "La Lecture" by Jean-Baptiste Hilaire

Italian Compact with Cherubs in Clouds on Rich Gold Oval-Shaped Compact
Beautiful playful cherubs painted on an enamel sky with clouds set in a vignette surrounded in rich embossed gold and emerald green and white enamel. Although it is Made in Italy (as the stamp inside attests), it is not the typical sterling case. This one is a brushed brass on the sides and bottom and the top is very heavily embossed in very intricate and ornate designs. The shape of the compact is also very rare being oval when looking at it from the side. Very unique! When opened, there is a full size beveled mirror in the lid and a removable powder screen in the base. It is very clean and the compact snaps together tightly. Because it is not sterling, the price is about half of those. As mentioned it is marked "Made in Italy" above the mirror on the inside. It is in excellent condition with no damage whatsoever. RARE Italian Figural Compact with Hand-Painted "Home from the Hunt" Scene on Faux Tortie Background
Autumn and winter are just around the corner and this compact really brings the feeling home for me! This lovely Italian compact features a hand-painted scene on the front of a man and (probably) his son returning home from the hunt with their hunting dog alongside. Both are carrying the fruits of the hunt over their shoulders. There is snow on the ground and the door is open to welcome them home. What I especially love about this compact is the VERY rare faux tortoise shell enameled background which picks up the color of the wood from the door of the house. It's quite lovely! Inside the compact you will find a beveled mirror in the lid in excellent condition and an original orange swansdown puff. The enameling on the lid is in excellent condition as well with only two or three very minor scratches on the clearcoat surface. Although I cannot find a stamp for 800, it is clearly marked Made in Italy and is in the same style as other Italian sterling compacts I have had. There was something above the Made in Italy stamp which may have been an 800 mark but it is misprinted or misstamped and is illegible. In any event, I am not going to sell it as sterling even though it very well may be. The price will reflect that. Compact measures 3-3/16" x 2-7/8". (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Inside is all done in gold vermeil with a mirror in the lid which is bevled but the gold retainer covers a lot of it. There is a tiny surface flake in the bottom edge of the mirror which is also mostly covered up. Hallmarks inside are 117 in a cartouche and FI for Firenze (Florence). 117 is the mark for Ristori Renato di Egisto. There is also a flower mark that I am not sure what it symbolizes. Included is a new maribou puff. Condition is really excellent ... at a glance it would appear mint. It is only when you turn it to the light that you can discern one scratch in the clear top coat and several tiny superficial little nicks here and there. None are noticeable looking at it directly and the gloss is excellent! I do like my compacts to be mint or near mint and I will forgive these minor imperfections because the compact is so striking otherwise. Measures 3-1/4" square ... it is a large compact! Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact with Hand-Painted Little Women in Garden Scene
This lovely Italian sterling vermeil compact depicts three women in a garden setting with a book and reminds me of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women". In fact, there are several paintings with very similar scenes done of Little Women with a book in a garden so this could very well be taken from one of those. The colors are very vibrant and the border is done in champlevé green enamel. Inside there is a full mirror in the lid and a powder screen in the base. It is marked with a lozenge and 800 stamp on the bottom of the inside. Condition overall is very good with some surface scratches visible only when held to light at an angle. Since the colors are so deep, they are truly very hard to discern unless you are looking for them. Measures 3-1/4" wide x 2-3/4" high. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Compact with Hand-Painted Portrait and Ruby "Jewels"
Elegance abounds in this breathtaking Italian compact featuring a rich golden case with ruby enamel background and faux ruby (enameled) jewels surrounding a hand-painted portrait of a lovely woman with a fancy bonnet. The process to create this rich red enamel actually uses real gold in the process and this compact looks like it is made from real gold although it is not. It just looks so rich! The back and sides are richly embossed with scrolls and leaves and are quite pretty. Inside is a round beveled mirror in the lid, the original powder screen in the base, and an original used swansdown puff. The painting is beneath beveled glass and behind the mirror, so I cannot say for certain, but these were more often than not painted on thin ivory sheets and this certainly appears to be of that quality. If there is an artist signature, it is beneath the edge where I cannot see it. Even so, it is definitely hand-painted and is just gorgeous. Excellent condition throughout! Comes with black felt sleeve for storing. Measures 2-3/4" diameter. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Historically Significant Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact Featuring Greek Mythological Painting of Nereid Riding a Hippocamp from Ancient Turkish Mosaic
This stunning Italian sterling vermeil compact features a rare painting of a partially nude Greek Nereid (sea nymph) with flowing red locks riding on a hippocamp. The scene is replicated from a mosaic tile floor found in the ancient Terrace House #2 in Ephesus, Turkey, which dates from the late 1st or 2nd century AD. What a wonderful find! The scene is set in champlevé enamel in white and surrounded by a border in deep cobalt blue. This really sets off the center painting. The sides of the compact are incised with designs all the way around and this is duplicated around the bottom edges as well. The interior is done in bright gold vermeil on top and bottom. There is no mirror nor is there any indication of one ever being inside. A new swansdown puff is included. The enameling is in great condition with no losses or chips. There are a handful of tiny scratches in the clearcoat only on the painting portion but nothing through the color but can be felt with your fingernail. They do not show up to the naked eye, though, unless turned to light. It is stamped 800 for sterling on the front rim. The compact measures approximately 3" x 2". RARE Italian Sterling Figural Compact Featuring Painting by Gerolamo Induno Entitled "Uno Partita a Scacchi" Circa 1881 with Faux Malachite Border
Indoor scenes are rarely found and highly prized on Italian sterling compacts. This particular one features a famous painting done circa 1881 by Gerolamo Induno titled "Uno Partita a Scacchi" or "A Game of Chess". It depicts a richly dressed couple engaged in a game of chess in an elegant room. The lady has a purse around her waist. The scene is surrounded by faux malachite enamel trim. The case is empty inside and could be used for paper money, calling cards, patches, or what have you. The entire case is richly embossed and the inside is gold vermeil which has some wear. It is marked 800 on the rim. As for condition, there are several tiny scratches on the surface that are visible when held to light. None of them are visible when looking at it straight on. There is a chip in the green border enameI in the upper left corner (close-up can be viewed in photos). Due to the rarity of the painting, I was more than happy to own this even with the flaws which don't bother me since they really are not easily noticed and I don't believe would be seen unless you look for them. Measures 3" x 2" overall. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Combo Compact/Lipstick with Hand-Painted on Ivory Rendition of Boucher's "Bird Cage" from 1763, Jeweled Handle
This beautiful Italian combination compact/lipstick features a rendition of Francois Boucher's famous "Bird Cage" painting done on ivory under glass in the center of the compact half of this combination piece. It is a gold case (brass most likely) which is richly enbossed. The top of the compact is shaped and has champleve white enamel around an inner circle of blue enamel which surrounds the painting. The inside of the compact has a full mirror in the lid, original powder screen in the base, and a pink swansdown puff. The lipstick is built into the handle and has a jewel which I believe is turquoise although I am not a gemologist and not an expert on identifying this. Please see all photos to see the beauty of this piece. Even though it is not sterling, combination Italian compacts such as this are rare indeed, particularly with paintings done on ivory. Measures 2-1/4" x 5-1/2" x 3/4". (Click on pic for more photos.) |

While the compact presents very nicely, it does have some scratches in the painting which are visible when held to light but not in photos. There is also a chip in the lower right corner in the blue portion. These are taken into consideration when pricing which is below what I paid for it. Measures 3-1/8" x 2" overall. Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact "The Birdcage" (Les Amours Du Bocage) by Nicolas Lancret circa 1735
This lovely compact depicts a famous painting done by Nicolas Lancret circa 1735 entitled "The Birdcage" and features a romantic couple with a birdcage and a shepherdess with her flock and a dog reclining at their feet. The painting is quite detailed and has vibrant colors. The border is a rich emerald green faux malachite enamel. The case is ornately embossed on all sides. The interior is done in gold vermeil and there is a mirror in the lid. The mirror is not beveled so I suspect it is a replacement done by a previous owner as these are usually beveled. It is stamped 800 on the retainer on the mirror ... no other hallmarks are visible that I can find. The enameling is in excellent condition with only a few superficial scuffs visible only when held to light or with a loupe ...it is really superb. Measures 3-5/8" x 2-5/8". The interior has a shaped beveled mirror in the lid with only some minor silver loss on the edge in a few spots and an open bottom, all done in gold vermeil. There are several scuffs on the surface of the compact but only visible when held to light ... this is age-appropriate wear and does not affect the appearance in any way. Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact with Rare Figural "The Well"
Of all the hundreds of Italian compacts I have owned, I have never had this scene before. I don't know it's origin or the original painting, but I am calling it "The Well" until I learn otherwise. The scene depicts a young woman gathering roses and a gentleman beside her drawing water up from a well. The scene appears to be part transfer and part hand-painted ... see close-up photo. The interior features a beveled mirror in the lid and the base is open ... it is all done in gold vermeil inside. Enameling on this one is about as close to perfect as you will find ... only very very minor superficial scuffs barely visible even when held to light. Marked "Made in Italy" and "800". Figural Partial Nude Enamel Cigarette or Calling Card Case ~ Made in Germany ~
with Matching Italian Sterling Vermeil Lipstick
Although technically this calling card case isn't sterling silver (at least not marked as such) or Italian (it is made in Germany), the genre of the style and scene merited me placing it in this section. The scene is set in the center with beaded enamel border and depicts a romantic couple with the woman partially nude in a state of deshabille'. A flock of sheep rests alongside them. Around the scene is turquoise enameling in cloisonne' design and this is surrounded again with another border of enameled beads. Enameling is in mint condition with no scuffs or scratches visible to my eye. Interior is finished in gold wash and has a spring-loaded slip on both sides. It is marked Germany on the border. Case measures 3-1/4" x 2-1/8" overall. There is a lipstick in our collection that is a very good match to this case. The same scene is surrounded in faux turquoise enameling with a turquoise jewel clasp. When open, the lid flips up to reveal a mirror (some foxing around edges). Overall in very good condition! Lipstick is 2-1/4" long. Previously listed for $1,049 for the set. (Click on pics for more photos.) |

A basket of flowers rests at their feet holding roses picked from the nearby garden and a tiny pet dog reclines close by. If you look closely, it almost looks as if they are singing a tune! This lovely scene is surrounded by faux lapis enamel and faux turquoise with tiny hand-painted flowers for embellishment. Interior of compact has a horseshoe shaped mirror in the lid which has a clean crack ... still can see clearly. Hallmarks include 800, Made in Italy, and another symbol I can't make out. Condition of enameling on lid is close to mint with only a few very, very minor scuffs visible only when held to light ... really insignificant. Measures 3-1/8" x 3-1/4" overall. Previously listed for $850. (Click on pic for more photos.) |

Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact Featuring Romantic Couple in Pastoral Scene - Rare 2-Tone Blue Border
Here we have a very sweet figural sterling vermeil compact with a slovely pastoral scene of a romantic couple in a country setting with a sheep lying beside them. The gentleman appears to be playing with the lady's hair. This is one of the prettiest lid designs I have seen with the double 2-tone blue border withcobalt on the inside and powder blue on the outside with sterling designs throughout. Interior features a beveled mirror which is in pretty bad shape ... it has a cracked corner and the silver is deteriorating. Marked "800" in the base with original powder screen. Italian Sterling Vermeil Figural Compact Featuring Romantic Couple w/Bird
This compact is for the beginning collector who wants a reasonably priced compact that will display well. It is being sold as is for a few reasons: thre is a significant chip in the baby blue enameling right at the clasp and the surface has significant scuffing in the glass clearcoat ... it does not intrude into the enameling at all. The scene is figural and depicts a young lad holding a little bird up to his lady fair. The enameling around them is really beautiful and intricately done in an unusual soft baby blue color. The sterling base has rich gold vermeil all over ... the sides are richly embossed in florals and the base is done in a basketweave design. Interior features a framed-in beveled oval mirror in the lid and open powder well in base. Marked "Made in Italy" in the base. Measures 3-1/4" x 2-1/4" overall. Previously listed for $325. Italian Sterling Vermeil Compact Featuring Romantic Couple
Here we have a courtier gallant with his lady fair ... his hat is swept off as he bows toward her. The object of his affections is richly begowned in overflowing skirts, dainty slippers, and wide-brimmed feathered hat. Rich in detail and beautifully surrounded in faux turquoise enameling. Interior features a large mirror in the lid which is beginning to lose its silvering. If there was a retaining border around the mirror, it is missing, but mirror is glued in place (I would replace mirror if I were keeping this one). Measures 3-5/8" x 2-5/8" overall. Italian Compact Featuring Painting from Fragonard's Progress of Love Series
Beautiful figural compact from Italy with romantic couple taken from Fragonard's series Progress of Love done in enamel on the front. Compact is completely engraved on all sidesbut it is not sterling ... this one is brass and a nice imitation of the real thing. Italian Figural Compact with Frogs & Lily Pads on Deep Turquoise Enamel Guilloche Pond
This is a very rare Italian compact done in a highly unusual design. Background of deep turquoise creates a pond with lily pads and frogs frolicking about. Sides and back are all embossed as is typically found, only the top is different. Interior features a beveled rectangular mirror in lid and has a swansdown puff. There is some damage to the enamel on the far left side; other than that, it is perfect. This has been in my collection for some time and I'm finally ready to move it along to its next owner ;-) .
