Sterling Silver Hand-Painted Enamel Guilloche 10-Pc. Vanity Set by Saart Bros.

This is a fabulous sterling silver and enamel guilloche vanity set made by Saart Bros. of Attleboro, Massachusetts, probably between 1897 and 1920 as button top shoes were out of style after that. It is one of the most complete sets I have ever owned and is just gorgeous in person.  The set consists of 10 pieces (15 pieces if counting jars and lids separately) including scissors, shoe horn, comb, button hook, cuticle tool, two small jars, two perfume/cologne holders, and toothbrush holder.  The enamel guilloche is a snow white color with hand-painted pink roses on each.  The design also allows for a center vignette where a monogram could be added and this one has two letters which look like "VC" but I can't be sure.  You be the judge :-).  ALL of the enamel is absolutely perfect; however, the shoehorn has significant loss to the horn portion as does the tip of the button hook, cuticle tool and scissors (this part of the set is not sterling, just the handles).  The perfume and cologne bottles have different shapes to their stoppers to enable you to tell the difference between perfume and cologne. All of the glass pieces with exception of toothbrush jar have polished bottoms as well. The bottoms of the small jars also have beveled edges and one has an extremely tiny fleabite on one edge that is barely noticeable.  All in all this is a fabulous set.  I have added 34 pictures so you can see everything there is to see on these pieces. Measurements are:

Gorgeous LaMode Enamel Guilloche Octagonal Compact with Hand-Painted Roses and Matching Comb in Original Case

This lovely little set has a matching octagon shaped compact and comb with baby blue enamel guilloche with  hand-painted roses.  The compact is marked LaMode on the frame inside.  It is in a fitted case.   The compact has a covered powder well with loose powder still inside as well as a beautifully damascened cover over the rouge pot which also has a mirror on the reverse.  Both original puffs are still intact.  The comb is a faux tortie and has the same lovely baby blue enamel guilloche with hand-painted roses.  It is in excellent condition with no discernible damage that I can see.  The case has very minor wear to the outside as shown in the pictures.  Comb measures 4-5/8" x 1-1/2"; compact is 2" square. Case is 5" x 3-1/4".

Sterling Silver Mint Green Enamel Guilloche Manicure Set by Albert Carter, Birmingham, in Crystal Holder - Hallmarks 1929

This is one of the finest manicure sets I have ever owned and I have had it in my personal collection for over 20 years. It is hallmarked from 1929 and was made by Albert Carter of Birmingham, England. The set consists of several beautiful mint green enamel guilloche on sterling silver pieces including two covered boxes (for rings or patches), a cuticle trimmer, cuticle pusher, a nail file, and nail buffer. Enameling is in very good condition with only a few areas of wear right at the very bottom of the three hanging pieces and one 'spot' on the edge of the file; all in all very minor as most of these sets have very noticeable damage from use.  This one is pretty near perfect.  The pusher and trimmer are marked "Steel English Make" on the tool ends.  The nail buffer bears the hallmarks for Albert Carter and Birmingham 1927. The top bar is hallmarked for 1929 (I know the sticker says 1930 but it is actually 1927 - 1929). The lids for the two covered pots bear the hallmark date for 1928. There are two round buttons at the top of the stand that add to the charm and beautify of this set.  The crystal base is 4-1/2" wide x 4" deep x 5/8" high. The height to the top of the stand at the buttons is 5-1/4".  The tools are approximately 5-1/2" long x 5/8" wide. The nail buffer is 3-3/4" long x 1-1/4" wide x 1-3/8" high.  The pot lids are 1-3/8" diameter. This is a beautiful set and totally usable today.

Sterling Silver Blue Enamel Guilloche Brush Set by Richard Comyns, London, 1927

Here is a wonderful pair of blue enamel guilloche brushes on sterling silver mounts done by Richard Comyns of London.  Both pieces are hallmarked to the year 1927.  The enamel is all in fabulous condition with only a few insignificant scratches only visible when caught in the light.  The detail in the design is exquisite. The bristles are natural and in excellent condition as well.  This set is very clean and could easily be used today.  Or just place it on your vanity to enjoy looking at it as I have.  The hairbrush measures almost 9" long x 2-1/2" wide and the clothes brush measures 6-1/4" long x 1-5/8" wide.

Austrian Bronze Embroidered Vanity Set

What a lovely set this is!  Made in Austria, all four pieces are done in embossed bronze ormolu with hand-embroidered inserts.  The large jewelry casket features a parrot nestled amongst flowers.  The other three pieces have the flowers without the bird.  The set consists of the large footed jewelry casket a covered crystal box, a covered crystal powder jar, and a vanity or calling card case.  All of the pieces are in excellent condition and they are all covered with glass tops to protect the delicate handwork.  The jewelry casket is velvet lined.  The top glass is slipped down a bit on the right side and I have not tried to mess with it as I prefer it as is without tinkering with the lining.  All in all this is a great set that would be a beautiful addition to milady's vanity.  Pieces and measurements are as follows:

French Gilt Bronze 5-Pc. Dresser Set with Artist-Signed Hand-Painted Portraits with Teal Enamel Guilloche in Presentation Box

This is one of my favorite vanity sets that I have ever owned.  When I open the lid to the box, it just literally takes my breath away!  The portraits are all richly painted in vibrant shades of blues but what does not show up in the photos is the iridescent foil back enamel used in their clothing and scarves that literally changes color and sparkles like jewels.  I wish I could have captured that in the photos but the best I could do was to show the different colors that you will notice as you scroll through the pictures of the same items.  The teal enamel guilloche surrounds are done to resemble moire silk ... it is just beautiful!   The set consists of four brushes and one hand mirror, each stamped FRANCE, with bronze frames and foil back enamel portraits of beauties, each signed with the intials "H.C." or "L.C.".  The set is in excellent condition with some areas of oxidation to gold (I have not polished as I prefer to leave the original gold patination intact for the purist). There are also some very faint fissures (small lines) in the enamel guilloche which you will see in the close-up photos.  The beveled mirror is clear but does have some fogging from age and one area of loss at the bottom edge but still totally usable. This set is one of the most beautiful you will ever see!  Measurements for each piece are given below.  Box measures 12-1/2" x 10-3/4" x 3-1/4" high and opens at top and front. The box is lined in yellow paper which does show some signs of wear.

Hair Brushes:  3-1/4" wide x 5-1/2" high; 10" long overall

RARE  R & G Co. LaMode Tomato Red Enamel Purse Set with Matching Octagonal Rigid Handle Compact and Comb

This lovely little set has a matching octagon shaped compact and comb with tomato red enamel in a two-tone design.  The compact is marked R & G Co. on the frame inside which denotes it was made by Ripley & Gowan of Attleboro, Massachusetts.  It is in a fitted case which is marked LaMode, which was part of the R & G line.  The compact has a rigid handle with a thin band of black accenting the round portion.  The compact has a rotating sifter inside with a mirror in the lid and an original puff still intact.  The comb is a faux tortie and has the same lovely tomato red two-tone enamel holder.  It is in excellent condition with only one or two very minute (teeny) scratches near the edges on the compact front.  I had to use a loupe with the light at an angle to even see them as it appears mint to my naked eye.  The mirror does have age appropriate fogging as is typical. The case has some wear to the outside as shown in the pictures and the silk lining is split at the fold where the lid flap closes.  Other than that it is in good shape.  Comb measures 4-5/8" x 1-5/8"; compact is 2" diameter plus 1" for the handle. Case is 5-1/4" x 2-7/8".

Blue Etched Glass Dresser Set with Perfume Bottle & Powder Jar with Sterling Repousse Lid

Here we have a beautiful antique blue etched glass dresser set consisting of a powder jar with sterling lid and maribou puff and a matching perfume bottle.  Both pieces are deeply etched with flowers and flower buds all the way around with incised lines separating the flowers.  The stopper lid has incised lines and thumbprint ovals.  The lid on the powder jar is sterling repousse although unmarked.  I am including a new ribboned maribou puff with lambswool bottom for the powder to adhere.  Excellent condition throughout with exception of a few small chips on the bottom edge of the stopper (tip that sets inside the bottle).  Perfume measures 5" tall x 4-1/2" diameter and the powder jar is 4-1/2" diameter x 2-1/2" high.

Artist Signed Hand-Painted 5-Pc. Vanity Set with Rare Talc Shaker

This fabulous vanity set is all hand-painted and artist signed W. Wilson on each piece.  The trays and covered jars are all Limoges while the talc shaker bears an Austria hallmark.  The beautiful roses are so lifelike and the subtleties in the colors are wonderful.  The set consists of a large tray, smaller pin tray, covered powder jar and hair receiver and a rare talc shaker.  The two covered pieces each rest on three gold ball feet.  All of the pieces are gold trimmed and the entire set is in excellent condition.  There are no chips or cracks or damage of any kind.  Be sure to look at all the pictures ... and bear in mind that the photos never do justice to the actual beauty of the pieces.  Measurements of the pieces are as follows:

Exquisite French Baccarat Crystal Gilded Vanity Set in "Empire" Design

Stunning 4-pc. (plus lids) vanity set made by the prestigious French crystal company Baccarat.  This set is done in gold gilt in the discontinued "Empire" design which is quite exquisite in its own right. I have not been able to determine when this was discontinued but I believe this set dates from the 1920's or 30's.  Set consists of covered powder jar, perfume atomizer, and two bottles for perfume and cologne (difference in stoppers helps to identify contents).  Each piece is signed on the bottom.  The pieces are all panel cut and polished and the design is repeated in alternating panels all the way around the bottle and on the lid and base of the powder jar.  Perfume atomizer is hardened and does not work but is original. It is pretty much perfect with no discernible damage of any kind (in fact, the only apology is the teeniest of fleabites on the base of one stopper too small to even photograph).  Measurements of the pieces are as follows:

Perfume Bottle Bases are 5-1/2" high x 3-1/2" diameter.  Stoppers add another 2" - 2-1/8" more.
Perfume Atomizer:  4-7/8" high x 2-3/4" diameter.
Powder Jar: 3-1/4" diameter x 3-3/4" high.

Gold gilt is all in perfect condition with no visible wear anywhere.  Bases are also gold gilt.  These pieces are extremely heavy lead crystal and the weight of all four pieces is 7 lbs. 12 oz.!

Black Amethyst 3-Pc. Vanity Set with Perfume, Trinket Jar and Dresser Tray with Gold Gilt Trim

Absolutely gorgeous is this wonderful 3-pc. black amethyst vanity set with gold gilt trim on all the pieces. All of the items are panel cut with polished bottoms and the gold gilt is applied over an etched relief classic design.  The stopper of the perfume and the lid on the trinket jar have facet-cut tops and all pieces have polished bottoms.  The quality is exquisite and is obviously one of the elegant glassware companies of the early 1900's.  Other than very very minor little nips here or there (too small to photograph), the set was in excellent condition until I inadvertently dropped something on the edge of the dresser tray causing a chip which I reglued back on but because of this, I am basically including that piece free of charge and only pricing it based on the other two pieces.  The color appears black but when held to light it reflects a deep amethyst color (see photograph of this).  The tray measures 8-5/8" long x almost 3" across x 1-3/4" high.  Perfume is 2-1/2" diameter x 6-1/4" high.  Trinket jar is 3" diameter x 5" high. The set is quite heavy.

Rare "Antoinette" 3-Pc. Vanity Set Featuring Figural Colonial Ladies in Hoop Skirts -- Puff Box and Pair of Matching Perfumes

This is a very rare 3-pc. vanity set with full-figured colonial ladies ... their upper bodies are of frosted glass while the bottom halves which make up their full skirts are done in clear PINK glass.  I had a really hard time capturing the true pink color ... my photos look more peach or orange tinted when in reality they are a true pink and MUCH prettier than these pics show.  I do not know who made the set and cannot find out much about them ... they are pictured in Bedroom & Bathroom Glassware of the Depression Years on page 144. This set is in excellent condition and still has traces of the black eye paint which even the book's pictures are missing most.  The puff box measures 4" diameter x 4" high.  The perfumes are each 2-7/8" diameter at the bottoms x 4-3/4" high.

Pastel Peach Enamel Guilloche Baby Set in Presentation Case

Here is a very cute little baby gift set in pale peach enamel guilloche. The set is in its original velvet lined presentation case and consists of a beveled mirror, tiny comb and matching brush. I would date this to the turn of the century (1900's) and it does show use. The mirror is beveled and is in excellent clear condition with a rope twist retainer. The enameling on the mirror has a tiny chip on one side visible in pics. The little brush has a few chips in the white enamel border, again visible in pics. The enameling on the little comb is pretty good with no real noticeable damage. The metal on the comb shows some pitting but not too bad. All in all this is a very presentable little set for display or use. The bristles are natural and the comb may be bone or ivory ... I can't be sure but it looks to have a faint graining pattern ... I will try to test this. The original box is in excellent condition. No maker's mark that I can find. Box measures 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 1-3/4" deep with brass closure. Mirror is roughly 2-1/4" x 1-3/4"; brush is 3" long and comb is 3-1/4" long.

Sterling Silver Hand-Painted Enamel Guilloche Manicure Set Dated 1911 by Levi & Salaman, Birmingham, in Presentation Case

This is one of the finest manicure sets I have ever owned and I have had it in my personal collection for over a decade now. It is hallmarked from 1911 and was made by Levi & Salaman (read company information on the Compact Manufacturers page). The set consists of several hand-painted enamel guilloche on sterling silver pieces including two covered boxes (for rings or patches), a cuticle trimmer, nail file, and nail buffer.  There are two manicure scissors included, one which is marked Sheffield. Enameling is in mint condition with no apologies whatsoever. All sterling pieces are hallmarked. The only problem at all is the hinges on the back of the case have come detached.  The pieces are all there and the box holds together ... this could be fairly easily fixed and I will try to take care of it before selling.  I just never bothered with it since it closes fine.  The case is 9-1/2" long x 6" wide x 1-1/2" deep. The trinket boxes are approximately 1-1/2" diameter, the buffer is almost 4" long, and the two long tools are 6" long.  This is a stunningly beautiful set and one that I have had to think hard about parting with but it's time to allow someone else to enjoy it. Be sure to view all the pictures to fully appreciate this wonderful set.

Sterling Silver Figural Hand-Painted Enamel Guilloche Baby Brush & Comb in Mirrored Presentation Box

Lovely little sterling silver baby brush and comb set in a faux(? ... might be real) snakeskin presentation box.  The brush is done in enamel guilloche with a pink stork hand-painted on the back.  The mirror in the fancy lid has a nice wide bevel but is beginning to lose silvering around the edges (pictures show this clearly).  Bristles are natural, probably boar.  This is one of the finest baby sets I have ever had and it has been in my collection for many years.  Perfect for a baby girl as the stork is pink but it would be great for any baby ... or adult!  It would be a lovely addition to any vanity as it is just so pretty.  It is marked Birmingham and I believe the year to be 1927.  Enameling is in excellent condition.  The comb is split inside the silver frame where one of the pins went through it but it stays in and is fine ... just needed to mention for accuracy.  The brush measures 3-1/4" x 2-1/4" , the comb measures 3-1/2", and the box measures 4-3/8" x 3-1/2" x 2-1/4" high.

Faux Enamel Guilloche Baby Brush & Comb in Presentation Box

This darling little set is made to look like enamel guilloche when in reality it is a damascened base metal with a deep rose overlay. The inside of the case is lined in a beige velvet with accent twisted cable around the edge.  The brush itself is natural bristles and the comb is torty.   There is age appropriate wear to the metal and the rose finish but very minimal (see all the pics for close-ups). The brush measures almost 3" x 1-3/4" x 1-1/8" high  , the comb measures 3-3/4" x 1" , and the box measures 4-1/4" x 3-1/2" x 1-1/2 " high.

1912 Devon Ware "Lune" 8-Pc. Vanity Set by SF & Co, Stoke on Trent, England

Of all the vanity sets I have owned, this one has to be my absolute favorite!  Probably because the date on the bottom dates its manufacture to 1912, the year the Titanic embarked on its historic voyage.  I just love the colors and the designs on this.  It was made by S. Fielding & Company in Stoke-on-Trent, England.  The 8-pc. set consists of a large shaped tray, pair of candle holders, hatpin holder, hair receiver and covered powder jar (lids count as part of set).  Amazingly, ALL of the pieces are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks ... almost unheard of in a set of this size and age.  The only sign of age at all is the slight wear to the gold gilt edging, all clearly visible in the pictures above.  I believe "Lune" is the name of the design. Below are the measurements of each piece:

Tray:  16-3/4" long x 8-1/4" wide
Candle Holders:  6-1/2" high. Base is 3-7/8" diameter and top is 2" diameter
Hatpin Holder: 5" high. Base is 3-7/8" diameter and top is 2" diameter
Hair Receiver:  4" diameter x 3" high overall
Powder Jar: 4" diameter x 4" high overall

The full marks are on the tray, hatpin holder and powder jar.  The other pieces just have the number 0709.  Every time I look at this gorgeous set, I feel like I have stepped back in time to that graceful era.  It has been in my own collection for many years and now I am ready to pass it along to another lucky owner.

Irice Pink Controlled Bubble Perfume & Powder Jar with Original Label

Here is a beautiful LARGE dresser set that I have never seen the likes of before ... done in clear and pink controlled bubble glass, the pieces are quite heavy.  These pieces were made in Italy for the Irving W. Rice Co. of New York (Irice).  Both pieces are in excellent condition ... perfume dauber intact ... powder has original swansdown puff with pink ribbon inside (feathers are fragile and starting to shed).  BOTH pieces retain the original Irice label.  Perfume measures 7" tall and powder is 5-1/2" diameter x 4" high approximately.

Figural Hand-Painted Serenade Enamel Guilloche Dresser Set

This spectacular dresser set is one of the finest I have owned. It consists of four pieces: large beveled mirror, hairbrush with natural bristles, covered crystal powder jar, and comb holder. Each piece is done in a pretty soft mint green color enamel guilloche with a hand-painted figural scene on the back (except the comb holder which has a scene but no figures). All of the enameling is in excellent condition with no chips or repairs whatsoever. At the very tip of the brush, there is a tiny hairline crack in the enamel. It blends in with the design and is so small it's really not even noticeable. The covered powder jar is made of the finest crystal with polished base and rim and is also in excellent condition with no chips. The hand mirror has a gorgeous beveled edge to the mirror that measures 3/8" wide. The metal frame is not sterling but it does tarnish ... the color is a goldish rose brass or vermeil coating. It is in excellent condition as well with a nice patina. The only mark I can find on the set is on the rim of the powder jar where it is stamped "Made in Germany". This is one of the nicest sets we've ever had and the pictures simply don't do it justice. The mirror measures 4-1/4" wide x 13-1/2" long. Brush measures 3" wide x 9-1/2" long. Powder jar is almost 5" diameter x 2-1/2" deep. Comb holder is 7-1/8" long x 3/4" high.

French Bronze Enamel Guilloche Vanity Set with Artist-Signed Hand-Painted Portraits on Ivory

This is a beautiful enamel guilloche vanity set with hand-painted portraits on ivory beneath glass insets. Surrounded with peach enamel guilloche borders and set in rich filigreed French bronze frames. The portraits all seem to be of the same woman in different gowns. The artist's signature, while on each piece, is very difficult to make out. The set consists of oval beveled mirror, case for powder box (glass jar missing), hairbrush and valet brush. Now for the bad news: both brushes are missing. So while the set is absolutely stunning for display, it is not functional. It may be fairly easy to replace the bristles from another set but I have never tried to do that as I only used it for my own display purposes. The mirror measures 4-1/2" wide x 12-1/2" long. Hairbrush measures 2-3/4" wide x 9" long. Valet brush is 2" wide x 7-1/2" long. Powder or jewelry casket case is 4" diameter x 2-1/2" high.

Fenton Blue Opalescent Hobnail 3-Pc. Vanity Set

This is a lovely vanity set by Fenton in blue opalescent hobnail set featuring a powder box and two perfume or coloogne bottles. Powder box measures 4-1/4" diameter x 3-1/4" high to top of center hobnail.  Cologne bottles are 4-1/2" high.  Excellent conditon ... bottoms of stoppers have very very minior fleabites that were too small to photograph (really not even worth mentioning).

Fenton Cranberry Opalescent Hobnail Perfume Bottles

We have here a pair of Fenton cranberry opalescent hobnail perfume or cologne bottles with opalescent hobnail crystal tops. Excellent condition with exception of a chip on the end of one of the stoppers. Measure 4-1/4" high each.

Pretty Turquoise Enamel Guilloche Sterling Silver Manicure Set in Original Leatherette Case

This is one of the prettiest enamel guilloche manicure sets I have run across ... in fact, it has been in my personal collection for several years now.  The color of the enamel is a pretty, deep turquoise color ... much prettier than pics show. Enameling on all pieces is excellent with the only exception being a few tiny chips on the bottom of the needle case. Metal has some pitting. Case measures 4-1/4" x 2-3/4" closed; 4-1/4" x 6" when open flat (the closure flap is missing though).

F &B Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche 3-Pc. Vanity Set

F & B has long been known for their exceptional enameled vanity pieces ... mainly compacts ... and it is rare indeed to find a vanity set made by this prestigious company. The color of the enamel is a soft aqua with a snowy white border. This is a beautiful set in excellent condition for its age.  All pieces are marked F & B and Sterling.  Measurements of pieces shown on the pictures.

Sterling Silver Manicure Set

This is a lovely 4-pc. sterling silver manicure set made by LaPierre Mfg. Co. of Newark, N.J. They were in business from the late 1800's until 1929 when they were bought by International. There is a monogram on each piece which looks like MSM. There is a slight hammered design in the center of the handle which lends itself to the art deco influence of the industrial age.

Ruby Flash Vanity Set

Pretty little ruby flash vanity set consisting of tray, covered powder jar and two perfume bottles. Both stoppers were missing, someone added the clear ball topper which works but is not original to the set. Some wear to the ruby flashing is visible but only upon close inspection. Nice, rich color!  Tray measures 10" x 7-3/4", powder jar is 3" x 2-1/4" and perfumes are 5-1/4" without stopper.
