Enamel Guilloche Lipstick

rosette Whimsical Figural Lipstick Cover with Hand-Painted Face & Designs - Mystery! New Listing!

This is such a cute little lipstick cover which is a total mystery to me as I have no idea where it came from or what it is made of!  I bought it way back in 2004 simply because I adored her sweet face.  It appears to be hand-made; in fact, when I purchased it I was told it was paper maché.  It has hand-painted features on the face and the flowers on the tube portion.  The tube itself is brass and is unmarked.  I always displayed it standing on a shelf where I could enjoy her sweet face.  It measures 4-1/4" tall.  The tube is 5/8" diameter at the open end and the length inside the tube is 2".  No damage that I can see although there appears to be some discoloration on the cream surface which I have not attempted to clean.  It may bleach out, I'm not sure, but I prefer to sell it as-found and leave that to the next owner.

Enamel Guilloche Lipstick

rosette Evans(?) Enamel Guilloche Lipstick with Hand-Painted Rose

This is a pretty little lady's enamel enamel guilloche lipstick holder which has never been used.  However, it does have damage to both side probably from being dropped.  It was in a box marked "Evans" on the lid; however, I am not sure this is original as the lipstick itself does not have any markings.  The lipstick tube twists up to extract the lipstick and is in excellent working condition.  Price is based on condition. Measures 2-1/2" long x almost 3/4" diameter. Box is 3-3/4" x 1-7/16" x 1-1/8" deep.

Figural Eyeglasses Beaded Case

rosette Mid-1800's Figural Micro-Beaded Eyeglasses Case Featuring Swan, Greyhound & Birds - VERY RARE!!!

I have had this beautiful micro-beaded eyeglasses case in my collection since 2005 and I have always loved it.  But it wasn't until I was photographing the case today for the site that I noticed there are birds on either end as well!  I had only seen the swan and the greyhound on the inside!  So imagine my delight when I realized it was a 4 figured case in addition to the vase of flowers and the wreath with the initials inside.  I am dating it to the mid-1800's due to the method of construction and design of the beads but it could be even earlier.  The bottom and top of the case fold flat and expand outward when glasses are inserted.  The outside of the case has a swan on one side and a wreath of roses with the intials T.B. or J.B. on the other.  The other half, which slides out from the outer half, depicts a greyhound dog on one side and a vase of flowers on the other.  The beads on the inside are a brighter white and this could be by design or it could be that the outside has faded over the years.  The inside is lined in a dark gold fabric which is original.  There is some type of a semi-rigid stabilizer in each half to keep the case shape.  It is a very rare and very amazing item and one you will be hard pressed to find again.  Yes, it's expensive but I paid a lot to get  it even back in 2005 and I believe it is worth every penny. It is in fantastic condition for its age with only a small area along one side with some bead loss, a few missing in the letter T or J, and a bit around the open edges of each half (these will all be clearly shown in the photos).  Enjoy the pics ... you'll never see another like it!  Outer half measures 4-1/4" high x 2-5/8" wide. Inner half measures 4" high x 2-1/4" wide.  When tucked together they can be closed to 4-1/2" high.  When opened at each end, they expand about 1-1/4".

Porcelain Half Doll Pin Cushion

rosette Porcelain Half-Doll Pin Cushion with Arm Up and Bouquet and Lace Skirt

This is a really lovely pin cushion porcelain half-doll in a striking pose with one arm raised and a bouquet tied to her wrist.  How this managed to stay intact after all these years is a mystery, but it is clearly original to the piece as it matches her gown exactly.  This lovely lady is wearing a dark pink dress with silk ribbon roses around the waist and lower edge as well as two rows of black lace.  The same silk covers the pin cushion beneath.  The silk is shattered on the top but it is still totally usable.  There is a faint mark on the bottom of the porcelain doll which I think says Germany but I can't get a clear enough look at it to be 100% certain.  The porcelain is in excellent condition; there is a teeny little speck on the side of the tip of her nose which may be an air bubble in manufacturing or could be a miniscule chip (although I find it hard to believe a chip could occur here).  In any event, it is truly insignificant and could easily be touched up with a teeny dot of paint if desired.  I have kept it original as it doesn't bother me at all.  Measures 6" high overall x 5" diameter at base; doll itself is about 3-1/2" high.

NOTE:  All of the pincushion/dresser half dolls came from a local estate here in the Pittsburgh area that we purchased back in 2006.  I am finally relinquishing them! :-)

Porcelain Half Doll Pin Cushion

rosette Porcelain Half-Doll Pin Cushion with Arms Up and Lace Skirt

This is a really lovely pin cushion porcelain half-doll in a striking pose with both arms raised and a rose on her shoulder.  This lovely lady is wearing a pink topped dress with a taupe silk skirt with a lace overskirt and ruched ruffle trim.   The same silk covers the pin cushion beneath.  The porcelain doll is in excellent condition with no damage whatsoever.  The skirt is perfect structurally ... there are some darkened spots on the lace overskirt that I thought were part of the design but upon closer inspection, there is actually a pin in each spot which has darkened it.  Ironically it is so symmetrical that I truly thought it was a french knot!  There is a dark spot on the back of the skirt (see pics) that I did not ever try to clean, so I can't say whether it would come out or not.  I prefer to leave this in as-found condition myself. Measures 6-3/4" high overall x 4-1/4" diameter at base; doll itself is about 3" high.

Porcelain Half Doll Accessory

rosette Porcelain Half-Doll Sewing Accessory or Puff Holder

I'm not sure this wasn't originally designed to hold powder puffs around the skirt of the doll, but when we purchased it, the skirt was being used as a holder for sewing accessories which we have left alone.  The half-doll is in excellent condition as well as the skirt which could probably use a steaming to hang properly.  Again, I prefer to leave this alone and allow the next owner to do as they see fit.  Everything on the doll is original ... please see all photos for condition.  Measures 7-1/2" tall overall x 5" diameter; doll itself is 2-1/4" tall.

Figural Mirror

rosette French Bronze Mirror with Hand-Painted Courting Scene, Beautifully Detailed Porcelain Flowers, and Figural Handle

This is an extraordinary hand mirror done in French bronze with an ornately detailed border of 3-dimensional porcelain flowers bordering a hand-painted courting scene.  In all my years of collecting, I have never seen another like it.  The scene on the back is quite large and has exquisite detailing down to the laces on her bodice and ribbons on her hat.  And And the handle on this one is equally spectacular with a full figured ballerina on both the front and back.  The handle is also openworked to give it even more appeal.  The mirror itself is nicely beveled with some foxing and a crack at the very bottom.  It is still perfectly usable and clear enough that it reflects a perfect image.  What a gorgeous piece! I am unale to find any markings on it but it was purchased as French bronze where I bought it and I did not want to take it apart to look for markings inside.  It is similar enough to other French bronze pieces of the era that I am satisfied that it was made in France.   Measures12" long x 4-1/2" wide overall.  Mirror portion itself is 4-1/2" x 6".

Hansel and Gretel Brushes

rosette Figural Fairytale "Hansel and Gretel" German Porcelain Half-Doll His & Hers Clothes Brushes (Whisk Brooms) with One Original Box

I have had this adorable set of half-doll porcelain clothes brushes in my collection since 2006.  I have never before seen these in fairy tale characters before and in full figures as well -- not the half figures as it typically found in these.  This set features Hansel and Gretel and have their original whisk brooms attached.  When I bought them, there was only one box -- the one for Hansel -- and both were stored inside it with the lid fitting about 2/3 of the way on (see photos).  As for condition, Gretel is perfect with no wear or damage whatsoever.  Hansel, regrettably, has been broken and repaired years ago and not a great job.  It could probably be redone better but I have left it alone. From some angles, it is not noticeable at all while from others, it is more obvious.  When viewed from the front, it is pretty much indiscernable.  I bought the set regardless of this because of its rarity.  And I would rather have a repaired Hansel than have him missing altogether.  They make a beautiful display!  The brushes are also different colors.  Gretel is pink (more faded on the front side than the back) which would be appropriate for the lady's brush.  This could probably be removed and turned around if desired but again, I have left it as found. Both dolls are marked Germany on the lower backs.  The doll portions measure 4-1/4" high; overall height is 8".  Be sure to look at all the photos to see the detail on these two beauties!

Hair Receiver

rosette RARE His & Hers Nippon Hair Receiver and Matching Shaving Mug with AIRPLANE in Hand-Painted Scene

This beautiful matching His & Hers vanity set consists of a hair receiver and shaving mug. Both pieces feature a pilot in an early airplane flying over a tranquil winding river in a treed landscape ... so pretty!  The planes and the clouds have lots of lavender and purple shades and the trees are green and gold.  There is an almost Egyptian design around the base ... since King Tut's tomb was discovered the next year, I am wondering if the excavations going on in Egypt might have had some bearing on this.  Both pieces are in excellent condition and both bear the Nippon mark which was used from 1891 - 1921.  Hair Receiver measures 4" x 2-1/2" high; Shaving Mug measures 3-7/8" diameter at top x 3-5/8" tall.

Portrait Mirror

rosette French Miniature Figural Nude Winged Goddess Gilt Mirror with Hand-Painted Portrait - Artist Signed!

This spectacular miniature hand mirror is perfect for stashing in a travel bag or purse although it is really rather too nice for such use!  The beautiful mirror features a hand-painted beauty on the front with foliate leaves adorning her hair and dress which sparkle in the light.  It is artist signed M Carus on the right side.  The painting is in excellent condition with no chips or damage whatsoever.  The handle of the mirror features a nude winged goddess (Nike?) on both sides.  The mirror is beveled and has some foxing from age but it totally usable as it is.  The base metal is made to look like bronze but I believe it is either brass or spelter with a gilt coating.  Although it appears to be French, I cannot find any marks to confirm it but it was sold to me as such by a reputable auction house.  Please view all the pictures to see how exquisite this piece truly is!  Measures 2" wide x 6-3/4" overall.  Mirror portion itself is 2" x 2-1/2".

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Cigarette Holder

rosette Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Mechanical Pencil for Chatelaine with Hand-Painted Roses

Chatelaines were elegant ways for women to carry utilitarian pieces and this is an exceptionally pretty example that was made for a very fancy chatelaine. It is very tiny ... measures only 3-1//4" long counting the little hanging ring and is less than 1/4" diameter. The pencil is done in a very pretty cornflower blue enamel guilloche with two hand-painted pink roses. I am not exactly sure how the lead is inserted but there is a lead in there at present. It is marked Sterling and Germany on the tip.  Condition is very good ... there is a tiny area of roughness right at the tip edge that is visible in the pictures.

Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Cigarette Holder

rosette Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Cigarette Holder by EJEKT

Although I have never been a smoker, I have always been a collector of beautiful enamel guilloche lady's items and cigarette holders are among the most elegant of all!  Can you just imagine the lifestyle that would allow you to whip out one of these and insert a cigarette in it?  You would have to be among the most stylish of women of your time, no doubt!  This particular piece is an unusual design done in sterling silver and enamel guilloche with hand-painted roses on it.  What makes it unusual is that it has a stem that pushes inward to eject the cigarette, hence the name "EJEKT" which is stamped on the neck in the silver portion.  The design was applied for patent as well. The hand-painted roses and blue forget-me-nots are exquisitely detailed and the entire piece is in excellent condition.  Measures 4-5/8" long.

Cambridge Vanity Tray

rosette Pink Elegant Glass Compartmented Vanity Tray by Cambridge with Etched and Gilded Floral Lid ... Circa 1920's

This is a truly gorgeous covered vanity tray made in 1926 by Cambridge ... I have seen it before with plain tops but this one is exquisitely etched and gilded in gold ... it is truly beautiful! The lid lifts off to reveal a compartmented interior with a powder in the center, rouge pot on one side, and lipstick and eyebrow pencil slots on the other. Referenced in the "Bedroom & Bathroom Glassware of the Depression Years", it states " ... is 4-3/4" wide and 8-1/2" long and was introduced by the Cambridge Glass Company in 1926." The bottom is marked on the underside "PAT. APPL'D FOR". This is a substantial piece and weighs over 2 lbs. ... it is in excellent condition with some minor age appropriate wear to the gold on the handle and edge and one very small fleabite on the INSIDE rim of the lid. This is a rare and fantastic piece!

Cameo Hatpin Holder

rosette Schafer & Vater Cameo Figural Jasperware Hatpin Holder

This is a lovely hatpin holder made in Germany by Schafer & Vater circa 1900.  The color is a soft pink with a wedgwood blue cameo of a different woman on either side.  The blue is also a softer muted shade which gives the entire piece a truly antique feel (which of course it is being over 100 years old!).  The top of the piece has 7 holes for hat pins.  As for condition, there are two factory flaws which bear mentioning but neither has any impact on its beauty or its functionality.  The bottom of the piece has a kiln split which only goes through in one teeny pin hole that you can only see if you put your eye up to one of the holes and hold it up to a bright light.  You cannot see through it otherwise and the split does not go through.  Also factory is an air bubble miss on the hair of the woman on the back of the holder.  Both of these issues are well pictured and will look significantly larger and worse in my photos than they do in person.  There is no damage whatsoever to the body of the piece elsewhere.  This is a beautiful item and would be a great addition to any hatpin holder collection.  Measures almost 4" across at base x 2-1/2" wide at the center front/back x 5" high.

Portrait Brush

rosette French Bronze Peach Enamel Guilloche Brush with Hand-Painted Portrait on Ivory

I am not sure who the lovely young woman is who was immortalized on this French bronze brush, but she was hand-painted on a thin sheet of ivory and signed by the artist whose name has faded with time and is not legible any longer. The workmanship on this lovely brush is superb as most of the French bronze pieces are. The portrait is set in a framed oval which is separate from the guilloche. And the enamel guilloche is a lovely shade of pale orange or peach with a moire pattern in the guilloche. At the top of the brush is an openwork ornate ribbon bow with roses above. The handle is also done in openwork on both sides and is stamped France on the very tip. The natural bristles in the brush are all intact and in good condition. This is a beautiful piece in excellent condition. Measures 12" long from tip to tip; brush portion is 5-1/2" x 3" not counting the ornate topper.

I have had this wonderful little fellow in my collection for years ... I always debated putting a puff in the dish but didn't want to take away from the buttons visible on his tummy. I would date this piece from the early 1900's as it is marked for the Sitzendorf Porcelain Manufactory of Germany. It is all snowy white with black hand-painted trim and nicely detailed face, right down to the exprssive eyebrows and forehead curl. It is in excellent condition with only some minor wear to the black paint ... all in all a great piece! Measures approx. 4-1/2" long x 3-1/4" wide x 2-1/2" high.

Enameled Chatelaine

rosette Rare Champleve' Enameled Chatelaine

Very old and very beautiful, this champleve enameled chatelaine has such pretty feminine colors. Always a huge fan of pinks and blues when used together, this one truly speaks to my heart. I cannot pinpoint the exact age but my guess is 1870's or 80's. It was obviously much used and much loved as it has what appearsto me to be very early attempts to replace missing enamel on the mirror piece (close-up photos will clearly show this but at a glance, you will not notice it at all). The base metal is probably brass or an alloy of brass. It has 3 pieces attached to it: a very old wooden pencil with pretty holder which all appears to be original, a covered mirror, and a tiny button hook which folds closed. Chatelaines were the precursors of purses and gave a lady a way to carry items easily and decoratively. This one would have been a dressy one to wear out on an evening. Be sure to see all the photos ... there are many!

The chatelaine measures almost 7-1/2" long to the bottom of the mirror.  Each piece measures as follows:

Clasp: 1-3/8" x 1-3/4" (clip is longer)
Mirror:  1-1/2" x 2"
Pencil: 2-7/8"
Button Hook: 3/4" wide x 1-3/8" long when closed, 2" long when open

Note: There is a great article about the history of chatelaines found here.

Jeweled Portrait Mirror

rosette Jeweled Cut Glass Hand-Painted Chatelaine Portrait (Queen Louise) Mirror - Artist Signed

This is one of the finest chatelaine mirrors I have ever owned ... it not only has a beautiful hand-painted portrait of a lovely young woman (thanks to a customer's information, I now know this is Queen Louise of Prussia, who died at age 34 in 1810), the reverse side has the most exquisite cut and beveled glass mirror surrounded by turquoise jewels. You just have to look at the pictures (which don't do it justice). The painting is done on porcelain and the artist has signed it but I cannot make out the name. The close-up photo will show it as clearly as I can see it. There is a tiny ring at the bottom of the handle for attaching to a chatelaine. Now for the mirror itself ... it is beveled and the edge of the bevel is cut in tiny scallops all the way around which makes it sparkle like a jewel. And there are jewels -- turquoise ones -- set around it in tiny bezels. There are 8 of them around the mirror and one more in the handle. The metal itself is either brass or bronze ... I am not an expert in this but it does have patination and is quite lovely in its own right. Again, the pictures will show this in greater detail than I can describe it. The mirror portion measures 1-3/4" wide x 2-1/4" high. The overall length of the mirror is 5-1/4" from the tip to the bottom of the ring. There are little decorative embellishments that protrude from the sides and top of the mirror (again, see pics).

Child's Mirror and Brush Set

rosette Child's Figural Mirror & Brush Set

The figures on this adorable little child's set look like children playing dress-up to me.  The scenes are done on porcleain and both are the same with only subtle variances. The metal surrounds are not sterling or even brass but rather a white metal base with gold wash over them which has worn on the high points. The brush is natural bristles and the mirror is nicely beveled.  It is in very good condition with a few age streaks at the top and bottom edges under the bevel but the center portion is clear and good. This is a very cute set that was meant for a child and shows that it was dearly loved by one. Mirror measures just over 6" long and 3-1/4" diameter at top. Brush is 5-3/4" long x 1-3/8" wide.

Portrait Mirror

rosette French Bronze Child's or Travel Mirror with Hand-Painted Portrait Signed "Paulin"

Believed to be a young Marie Antoinette, this beautiful little mirror appears to be French bronze (not marked). The portrait is signed Paulin and is most likely done on ivory although I have not taken it apart to verify this ... I don't want to bend the clips as they could break so I am going by my experience with such items. The mirror is quite heavy for its size and very ornate. The actual mirror is beveled but has extensive silver loss around the edges that is readily visible in the pictures; however, the center portion and all else that is not loss is clear and excellent for viewing. Original patina ... I do not polish these as the patination adds to its value. There is a tiny ring on the bottom to hang ig or even attach it to a chatelaine if such were the owner's desire ... I am not really certain of its purpose. Measures 8" long from tip to tip; round mirror portion is 3-3/8" 'diameter; mirror itself is 2-5/8" diameter. Mirror portion is 1/2" deep.

Meux's Special Stout Etui/Compact

rosette Meux's Special Stout Etui / Compact - RARE ITEM!

This is a very favorite collectible that I have had for many years now ... it is a combination etui (fully loaded!) and compact in a novelty bottle-shaped container derived from the famous Meux's Brewery which was founded in London in 1764.  The mechanics of this are delightful ... the lid or cap is actually the thimble beneath which is a removable spindle which holds two thread spools.  One end of the spindle has a removable cap which reveals a compartment to hold needles (2 are still inside).  Now for the really fun part!  Turn it over and you will see yourself in the mirror on the bottom ... but that's not all.  The bottom portion is also removable and inside can be found a powder cake in the "cap" and tucked inside the bottle portion is the sweetest little puff you ever saw ... complete with tiny ring handle and ribbon remnants. I have never seen another like this anywhere ... it is truly a rare piece and a crossover collectible for sewing afficianados also.  Measures 1" diameter at base x almost 3" tall. Marked "Depose" on the neck ... English origin.

Chatelaines were elegant ways for women to carry utilitarian pieces and this is an exceptionally pretty example that was made for a very fancy chatelaine. It is very tiny ... measures only 2-3/4" long not counting the little hanging ring and is only 3/16" diameter. The pencil is done in a very pretty aqua enamel guilloche with hand-painted pink roses throughout. I am not exactly sure how the lead is inserted as the tip seems to only turn back and forth for a short distance. I think possibly you load it from the tip and simply rotate it inward and outward to use it. Since there is no lead in it at present, I cannot be sure. There are marks on the ring but this piece is so tiny that I cannot make it out but I believe it says Sterling.  Excellent condition!

Sterling Silver Needle Case and Scissors

rosette Matching Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Needle Case and Sewing Scissors

This is such a pretty accessory for any seamstress!  The lovely sterling silver needle case and scissors are done in a pale pale blue enamel guilloche case with hand-painted pink roses.  There are markings on the needle case for sterling but I was unable to capture them in a photo as they are simply too small. The scissors are not marked but are usually stainless or some other stronger metal for the blades and sterling on the handles.  Needle case is in excellent condition but the scissors do have damage on one side. Please see photos for accurate condition.  Needle case measures 2" long x 1/4 " diameter;  scissors are 3-1/2" x almost 2" wide.

It is in excellent condition with no damage to the enamel whatsoever. Shoehorn has some scuffing which is age appropriate and I did not try to polish or buff out. See pictures for close-ups. Early Milk Glass Apothecary Jar

rosette Early Fire Opalescent Milk Glass Apothecary Jar

Here is an early milk glass apothecary jar with traces of original paint still on the sides and lid.  The design is very pretty with scalloped design surrounding the bottom and ornate edge on lid.  Called "fire opalescent" due to the fire that reflects pink in the edges of the milk glass when held to light.  Excellent condition ... there is one chip on the edge of the top but with all the curlicues in the design, I didn't even notice it until I inspected it for this listing ... not an issue at all.  Great for storing cotton balls!  Measures approximately 4-3/4" diameter x 7-1/2" tall.

There is one small chip on the rim where the top meets the bottom. I will add a picture of this shortly. Measures 2-1/4" long x 3/8" diameter.

Bronze Vanity Mirror

rosette Victorian "Columbia" Figural Pedestal Vanity Mirror

This love cast iron vanity mirror has a lovely copper bronze patinated finish and dates from the late 1800's and was made in Chicago. The mirror is beveled but is clouded over as seen in photo (it does look much worse in picture than it does in person). This was probably made for the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893 and the figure is more than likely that of Columbia. One of the legs has a very early repair that is reinforced from beneath ... very nicely done. The mirror itself measures 8" wide (9-1/2" at outside hinges) x 10" high. The base measures 5-1/2" square. The overall height is 18".

French Bronze Portrait Hand Mirror

rosette French Bronze Hand Mirror w/Cobalt Enamel Guilloche& Hand-Painted Portrait on Ivory

This is one of the finest hand mirrors I have had the privilege of owning. It is quite heavy and made of French bronze with cobalt enamel guilloche done in pique-a-jour around a center vignette of a hand-painted portrait on ivory of a lovely young woman. The painting is mounted beneath glass. The bronze handle of the mirror is done in pierced floweres and there is a rich filigreed bow with cascading ribbons on the top of the mirror. Mirror itself has a nice wide, shaped beveled edge. There is some cloudiness to the silvering itself but it is still fine for use. Measures approximately 15" high x 4-1/2" wide. Mirror itself is 5-3/4" x 4-1/2".

Tiny Wax Bust

rosette Victorian Wax Half Doll with Mohair Wig and Porcelain Arms

Wow! Such a pretty wax half doll with beautiful red mohair wig with tons of curls! This pretty lady is the perfect size for your dresser or vanity ... just stands 5" tall (not counting wires or hair). Her painted features are in excellent condition and the porcelain arms are also in great shape ... left pinky finger is missing the tip. As for the wax, the only damage I can see is the very tip of her nose is missing just a wee bit ... it is very hard to see except in the supersized close-up. In person, it's unnoticeable. This pretty lady came without clothes but I had a beaded trim collar that I draped around her for the photographs. It is signed on the lower back but I can't make out the letters. She could be dressed in a period costume and finished as a large pin cushion or even made into a doll with a bottle body or whatever suits your fancy. If you would like the beaded collar, I would include it for an additional $50.
